Be it known that Lan G. KNIGHT, citizen of the llnited States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencils, of which the following is a specification, reference `being had therein to the accompanying (ilrawings.

The invention relates to pencils and has for its object to provide a device of this character wherein a plurality of different colored crayons or leads are disposed within the pencil, and the pencil provided with selective means whereby any of said leads or crayons may be positioned' for use in the point of the pencil.

A further object is to provide a pencil comprising a casing having a rotatable sleeve therein, one side of which is open and adapted to be placed in registration with a desired crayon or lead for receiving the same, and a slidable rod within the sleeve whereby the lead or crayon which has been received within the sleeve may be forced into the point of the casing for use. Also to provide the sleeve with a knurled member adapted to be grasped forrotating the sleeve, and to which knurled member the sleeve is secured.

A further object is to provide the lead pushing member with a linger' engaging member, which extends through a slot in 'the knurled member, and is adapted to be received in a slot in the casing during a lead discharging operation after lead has been collected and deposited in the sleeve and the knurled member moved to a position where its slot will register with the slot in the casing for allowing the finger engaging member of the lead push rod to be moved longitudinally.

With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing,described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring'to the drawing, the numeral l designates the cylindrical casing of the pencil, and in which casing is rotatably7 mounted a cylindrical sleeve 2. Sleeve 2 at its lower side is provided with a longitudinally disposed opening 3, through which opening the various leads 4 may pass to the chamber 5 of the sleeve 2 when the opening 3 is placed in registration therewith. The leads 4 are preferably of difL' ferent colors, and the outer periphery of the casing l is provided with indicia 5, whereby the position of the particular colors may be easily ascertained,rand the sleeve 2 rotated to a position where any of the particular lead desired may be received therein. The leads 4 are disposed inlongitudinal grooves 6 in the chamber of the casing 1, and it will be seen by referring to Figure 2 that any number of leads may be disposed therein, and they will feed byl gravity towards the point 7 of the pencil. Rotatably mounted on the end 8 Vof the casing l is a rlinurled member 9, which member may be provided with a conventional form of rubber 10 if desired. Sleeve 2 is secured to the knurled member in any suitable inanner, however it is preferably brazed thereto at 11. Slidably mounted within the sleeve 2 is a push rod 12, one end of which is provided with an outwardly extending arm 13 which extends through a slot 14 in the knurled member 9, and which arm 13 also extends through the slot 15 in the sleeve 2 and is received in the slot 16 of the casing 1 during a lead discharging operation. When it is desired to use any particular color lead, for instance the red as shown in Figure 4, the sleeve 2 is rotated by the operator who grasps the. knurled member 9 and rotates the same, however the arm 13 of the finger engaging member 17, is during this operation disposed in the slot 1d of the knurled member 9, and when the finger engaging member registers with the particular indicia on the outer periphery of the casing 1, the opening f5 is in position wherel by the red lead will drop therethrough and into the lower end of the rotatable sleeve 2, after which operation the knurled member 9 is rotated by the operator until the arm 13 and the slot 141- therein will register' with the slot 16 in the casing, and then the operator places his linger on the linger engaging member 17 and forces the push rod 12 towards the point 7 of the pencil casing and said push rod will engage the red lead which is received in the sleeve 2 and force the same into the lead receiving aperture 18 in the point of the casing, and by manipulating said push rod, the lead may be fed from the pencil as desired during the use thereof.

lVhen it is desired to place a new lead in the device, the lead which is in the aperture 18 is removed and the next color desired is placed iny position in the manner above set forth. rThe device is particularly adapted for use by accountants and architects who use various colored pencils in their work, generally four different pencils, however it is to be understood that as many grooves 6 may be provided as desired for accommodating any number of colors desired.

From the above it will be seen that a magazine pencil is provided wherein a number of different colors of leads or crayons may be placed and collectively used as desired, thereby obviating the necessity of maintaining` a plurality of different pencils.

The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is l. A pencil comprising a easing having a chamber therein, a plurality of longitudinally disposed grooves in the vwall of the chamber of the casing, a sleeve rotatably mounted within the chamber of the casing and having an opening in the sides thereof adapt-ed to register with any of the grooves in the wall of the casing chamber, a rotatable member mounted on the casing and to which the sleeve is secured, a push rod slidably mounted within the sleeve, said push rod being provided with a linger engaging member extending through the slet the rotatable member and adapted to be received in a longitudinally disposed slot in the casing during a lead discharging operation, said linger engaging' member eX- tending through a longitudinally disposed slot in the sleeve.

A. pencil comprising a casing having a chamber therein, the wall of said chamber being provided with a plurality of lead receiving grooves, a sleeve rotatably mounted in the chamber of the casing and provided with an elongated opening `for the reception of any of the leads when in registration therewith, a discharge push rod slidably mounted in the sleeve, a linger engaging member extending through a slot in the sleeve and a slot in the casing, a rotatable member mounted on the casing and to which the sleeve is secured, said rotatable member being provided with a slot for the reception of the finger engaging member-.1
