Description

F. W. PLOSS CLOSURE FASTENER Filed Feb. 28, 1925- l 1 Mia nu AWM/Mfg Patented Dec. l5, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
CLOSURE FASTENEB.
Application filed February 28. 1925. Serial No. 12,316.
T all whomt may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK 1V. PLOSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia 5 and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closure Fasteners; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of the specification.
My invention consists in a closure fastener for doors and more particularly for automobile doors and bodies. My device is a dove-tail adapted to be attached to a door jamb and to receive a projection or tongue attached to the door, in such a manner as to keep the door well balanced on its hinges by the resilient contact thus formed between 20 the door and the door jarnb.
One advantage of my device is the type of full elliptical springs which surround a rubber cushion in such a manner as not to compress the rubber, thus no initial compression, p
which would harden the rubber isexerted upon this resilient cushion.
Another advantage appears in the elliptical spring reinforced by rubber. This construction allows the quickly acting spring to withstand the constant shocks to which it is subjected by the tortions to which an auto mobile door is constantly subjected. Also the shock of closing the door is well taken care of by the elliptical type spring, reinforced by a resilient cushion of rubber.
It has been found in practice that a long life may be expected fromelliptical type springs reinforced by rubber.
Referring to the drawings:-
Fig. 1, is a plan view of my closureV fastener. p
Fig. 2, is a side view of my device showing the tongue 'engaged therewith.
Fig. 3, is a cross section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4, is a cross section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5, shows a side view of the rubber cushion.
Fig. 6, shows my elliptical spring.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 10 denotes a flange of my casing 11 adapted for attachment to a door jamb having countersunk screw holes 12. The casing has an open face 13 and an open front 14:. The case 11 is provided with inwardly protruding portions 15 adapted to normally hold the rubber cushions 16 in place.V Surrounding or encasing each rubber cushion is an elliptical spring 17. A plate 18 having 30 countersunk screw holes 19 is provided for attachment to a door, and provided with a tongue 20 adapted to engage the springs 17 when the door is closed.
Having pointed out the novel construction, combination and arrangement of my parts, what I wish to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a closure fastener the combination of a casing consisting of a box having an outwardly extending rim; a cover plate hav ing an opening therein, said plate being adapted to engage said extending rim and two springs the ends of each being adapted to virtually meet, said meeting ends of each 75 spring being adapted to abut the same side respectively of the box.
2. In a closure fastener the combination of a casing consisting of a box having an outwardly extending rim; a cover plate hav ing an opening therein, said plate being adapted to engage said extending rim; two cushions positioned in said box; means in the bottom of said box adapted to engage said cushions; and two springs adapted to virtually enclose respectively said cushions, the ends of each spring being adapted to virtually meet, said meeting ends of each spring being adapted to abut the same side respectively of the box.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature.
FREDERICK W. PLOSS.
