' A. T. M CLUR G ANTIRATTLER FOR VEHICLE DOORS Filed June 2, 1923 Fatented Aug. 19, 1924.
ANGELO r. MCCLURG, on BERGHOLZ, oirro.
AN TIRATTLER FOR VEHICLE DOO'RS.
Application filed June 2,
T a-ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANGELO T. MGCLURG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bergholz, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Antirattlers for Vehicle Doors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to anti-rattlers for vehicle doors.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily applied to either old doors or doors in the process of construction and which when applied assists in maintaining the door against movement when the vehicle is in operation.
A. further object of the .invention is to provide a device of this character which may be very cheaply produced and which will not in any manner detract from the appearance of the vehicle to which it is applied.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure 1 is a sectional view showing an anti-rattler constructed in accordance with my invention applied to a vehicle door;
Figure 2 is a side elevation showing the anti-rattler in place, a portion of the lining being broken away; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral indicates an automobile door, and 11 a post of the door with which the free edge of the door coacts. As is well known tothose familiar with the art, these doors are provided with latches 13, bolts 14 of which engage in a recess 15, formed in the door post 11, when the door is in the closed position. When the door is completely closed the latch bolt 14 has its outer face aligned with the outer face of the recess 15 and accordingly projects into the opening, this face of the recess being usually provided with a wear plate 16 against which the latch abuts. When these doors are new the engagement of the wear plate 16 and latch bolt 14: is such that the door is held very tightly in position and movement thereof through vibra- 1923. Serial No. 643,002.
tion of the vehicle prevented. In use, however, the wear plate 16 and the coacting faces of the doorbeconie worn or deformed, so that the door is free to move through certain limits and accordingly the door rattles. hese latches 13, as is wellknown, are usually mounted in or upon a frame member 17 of the door which is constructed of wood.
In accordance with my invention I provide an anti-rattler member comprising a pair of plates 18 and 19 having at their ends angular flanges 18 and 19, the adjoining ends of which are pivotally connected as at 20. It will be noted that by this constructionthe' plates 18 and 19 are spaced from one another. The plates 18 and 19 are provided upon adjoining faces thereof, adjacent their free ends, with outstanding lugs 21 forming seats for the opposite ends of a spring 22 which tends to separate the free ends of the plates. This separation is limited by means of a headed stud 23 directed'through an opening 24 formed in the plate 19 and engaged with the plate 18. The plate 19 is of greater lengththan the plate 18.
In applying the device the frame member 17 of the door is notched from its inner face, as indicated at 25, and the anti-rattler seated in the notch with the plate 18 abutting the base or outer wall of the notch the plate being secured to the frame member, by means of wood screws 26 or the like. In attaching the plate 18 to the frame mem' ber care is taken that the end of the plate 19 projects beyond the outer or free edge of the door. The notch is made of a depth equal to the distance between the outer faces of the plates 18 and 19, with the result that the innerface of the anti-rattler when disposed within the notch is flush with the surface of the frame member 17, so that it is readily covered by the inner lining member 27 of the door. It will be seen that the free end of the plate 19 is so positioned that it will be engaged by the post 11 during closing of the door and the spring 22 compressed, accordingly, this spring will be constantly urging the door outwardly and will therefore maintain the outer face of the latch bolt 14 in constant engagement with the wear plate 16, so that rattling of the door is prevented.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the use of a device constructed in acsible in the construction of the device as hereinbefore set forth without materially departing from the spirit of my invention I do not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. In combination with a door, a post with which the door coacts, and a latch carried by the door and engaged in a recess formed in the post, a plate pivoted to the door at one end and havingthe free end thereof projecting beyond the free end of the door, and a spring engaging between the door and the plate and abutting the plate intermediate the ends thereof.
2. In combination with a door a post with which the door coacts and a latch carried by the door and engaged in a recess formed in the post, a plate pivoted to the door at one end and having the free end thereof projecting beyond the free end of the door, and a spring engaging between the door and the plate and abutting the plate intermediate the ends thereof, and means limiting the movement of the plate under influence of the spring. 7
3. In an anti-rattler, a pair of plates of difierent lengths, the shorter plate having means whereby it may be connected to a door, a pivotal connection between one end of the shorter plate and the corresponding end of the longer plate, a spring extending intermediate the plates and tending to separate the free ends of theplates, and a stud carried by the short plate and engaging the long plate to limit the movement thereof under the influence of said spring.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
ANGELO T. MoCLURG.
