Be it known that I, MARK Srnnnknn, a citizen of thc United States, residing at Bridgeton, in the county ot Cumberland and State oli New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bevel j Squares, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to bevel squares and its objects are to provide a bevel square of simple and durable construction which may bc quickly adjusted into various angular positions, and which will positively hold the adjustment during rough use.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is-fa side elevation of a bevel square constructed in accordance with my invention,

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a head having a slit 2 .in one end. This slit is preferably .in the lateral center ot the head and has a blade 3 pivoted therein by a screw 4. The blade may have any desired graduations thereon and its end 5 is preferably beveled. A slide 6, integral with the blade and of arcuate shape, is adjustable in a slitted guideway 7, in the other end of the head. Slide 6 is provided with notches S, preferably curved, y,on one of its edges and its other edge Q engages the inner irface 10 oli the slitted guideway 7. A plunger 11, slidable in the head, passes through the guideway and extends above the slide toward the blade. A shoulder 12, preferably curved, is provided near the lower end of the plunger and is adapted to engage the notches to hold the slide in an adjusted position. The notches may be located at dii'erent points on the slide to give any desired angular adjustment of the blade.

As shown these notches are located to give MZ, l/Vg, 1/4 and 1%, pitch and are marked d50, 300, 221/2o and 150 respectively. The notch, not marked, is used for locking the slide to 60 the head when the blade is at 900 thereto. The plunger may be held within the notches,
to keep the edge 9 in engagement with the surface l0, by any suitable means preferably by a threaded upper end 13 in the plunger 65 having a nut 14; sci'c\\'ed thereon and engaging the head.
To quickly adjust the blade, when nut l-l is loosened, a spring 15 is interposed between the nut and head to holdthe plunger against the notched edge of the slide. As the blade reaches the proper angle, a click from the plunger will be lelt which indicates that the proper notch is in registry. The curved contour of the notches and of shoulder 12, allow an easy sliding movement of the notches over the shoulder.
In Figure 6, I have shown a guideway 7 which is slotted instead of slitted. In all other respects the construction of the head is similar toV that shown in Figure 1.
In Figure 7, I have shown a plunger 11a provided with a lip 16 extending from shoulder 12"L to provide a slot 17 through which the slide may pass.
To adjust the blade of my beveled square into an angular position relatively to the position shown, the nut 14 is loosened until a downward sliding movement of the plunger frees shoulder 12 from notch 8. Spring 90 15 will normally keep shoulder 12 in engagement with the notch and slide. The blade is then moved until the proper notch for the required angle or pitch is in registry with shoulder 12. This position oit the notch is readily ascertained by a click which is felt from shoulder 12 engaging the notch by reason of spring 15. Nut 14 is then tightened to secure the plunger to the head and the square is ready for use.
By constructing a beveled square as above set forth the slitted ends may be readily milled and the blade easily stamped from sheet metal. rIhe blade and head are easily assembled and a durable and eicient tool provided. By locating the means, for holding the slide in adjusted position, on the head between the blade and slide, said means will be protected from accidental knocks which are likely to loosen them and disturb the adjustment of the blade.l
While I have described my invention as taking a particular torni.y it will be understood that the various parts may be clntnaed without departing; 'troni the spirit thereof, and heure l do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberta7 to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having; thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters lEatent is l. fr bevel square including a head havine`- a slit in one end; a blade pivoted to the other end; an arcuate slide on the blade adjustable in the slit: a phinger slidable in said head and engaging the slide for keeping it in adjusted position; means for securing the plunger in such adjusted position; and resilient means for automatically drawing the plunger against the slide.
