On the outer ends of the shafts 21 and 22 are conical Wheels A24 provided With contractible bands 25 having' cranks 26 and screws .27, said screws being used to contract the bands 25 about the conical Wheels 24, for a braking action, `when the` cranks .26 bear against pivoted brackets .28 'carried by the end frames 1 and 2. The pivoted brackets 28 may be swung to inactive positions to .provide clearance for the cranks '26 'when using` either crank to rotate either of the shafts 21 or 22. The pivoted brackets may be swung to active positions, as best shown in Fig'. 1, so that the cranks mayv rest thereon and remain stationary While the screws 2'? are manipulated vfor 'braking purposes in connection with either of the shafts 21 or 22. The contractible bands 25 are retained in place by retaining members 29 mounted on the ends of the shafts 21 and I22, and rthis individual control of either of the shafts is suggested in my prior Patent No. 1,125,107, above referred to.
Keyed or otherwise fixed on the long sleeve 20, adjacent the end 'frame 1, is a pinion 8O meshingwith the gear Wheel 14 of the vdrum 10 and pinned or otherwise fixed tothe sleeve 2O and the short shaft 21, as at 31, is an auxiliary drum 82 abutting the pinion 30.
Mounted on the long shaft 22, adjacent the `end frame 2 is a pinion 33 meshing with the gear Wheel 14 of the drum 9 'and abutting the pinion 83 is an auxiliary drum 34 which may be held on the long' shaft 22 by a spline 85 or such means as ret'a'insthe pinion 38 'on the long` shaft.
The tie rods 5 and 6 are A'eonneeted by a cross member 36 provided with a bearing '3? in which slides a clutch member 38 provided With a peripheral groove 89 for the inner 'e1- id 4() of a shift lever 41, said lever being pivotaily mounted on a depending "bearing 4 2 carried by one #end of the cross member 3 6. As a matter of good construction the auxiliary drum 84 may be pinned, as at 45, to the long,` shaft 227 and the auxiliary drum 32 may be keyed or otherwise fixed, as at 46 to the sleeve 20.
In the clutch member 38 on lthe sleeve 20 is a bushingl 47 and abutting the ends of said bushing are yieldable clutch members 48 and 49 houied by the tubular casings 44. The clutch member 48 is slidably keyed on the long' shaft 22, as at 50, and is constantly pressed towards the clutch member 38 by the expansive force lof a coiled spring 51 in the casing, 44 about the long shaft 22.
The clutch member 49 is siidably keyed, as
at- 52 on the sleeve 20 and is constantly pressed towards the clutch member 38 by the expansive force of the coiled spring 53 in the 'casing 44abou't the sleeve 20. The confronting ends of the clutch members 38, 48 and 49 have teeth or projections 54 adapted to mesh or interlock so that a driving relation may be established between all of said clutch members or the clutch member 38 with either ofthe clutch members 48 or 49.
On the inner Walls of the end frames 1 and 2 are pivoted -gravity pawls 54 adapted to engage the gear Wheels 14 of the drums 9 and 19 and prevent clockwise rotation of said gea-r Wheels when viewing either Fig. 3 or Fig'. 6.
There are variouswvays of using the Winch and its use depends Vmore or less on its installation, but in operation the following may be accomplished.
With the contractible bands 25 clamped on the conical Wheels 24 either Vof the cranks 26 or both can be used for revolving the drums 9 and 10 to Wind or unwind any cable or liexible member' attached to said drums.
By loosening one of the contractible bands 25 and shifting the clutch member 38 the other crank can be used to rotate one of the drums independentof the other.
During the operation of either one or both of the drums rotation thereof can be controlled by the brake lever 16.

What I claim is l. A winch comprising a frame work, drums in said frame work, said drums having confronting braking` heads, a driving mechanism for said drums, said driving mechanism including independent shafts and a clutch mechanism by which said shafts may be operated in synchronism, and a brake lever operatable between said drum heads and adapted to contact therewith.
2. A winch having orums operatable in synchronism or one independent of the other, a driving mechanism for said drums, said driving mechanism including independent shafts, a clutch mechanism normally coupling; said shafts for operation in synchronism and adapted to permit of either' shaft being driven independentof the other, and auxiliary drums operated by said driving,` mechanism and adapted to facilitate manual control of each shaft.
In awinch having a winding' mechanism composed of main drums operatable in synchronism or independent of each other, a driving mechanism therefor including alined shaftseach adapted to drive a drum, a crank for each shaft adapted to be fixed relative to its shaft and adapted to be used as a brake for said shaft, and a clutch mechanism associated with said shafts whereby said shafts may be clutched together or disconnected.
4. A winch as called for in claim 3, wherein said clutch mechanism includes a shiftable clutcl'. member, yieldable clutch members and a casing for all of said clutch members.
5. A winch as called for in cla-im 3, and an Iauxiliary drum for each main drum to facilitate manual independent control of said main drums.
G. In a winch, coaxial drums having confronting ccnveX heads, a brake lever operatable between the heads of said 'drums to control the rotation of both of said drums or either of said drums when one or the other is held stationary, and a driving mechanism for said drums.
7. A winch as called for in claim 6, where in said driving mechanism includes a shaft for each drum, and means by which said shafts may be operatively coupled thereto.
