Abstract
456,604. Endless belt conveyers. SUTCLIFFE, Ltd., R., Universal Works, and SHEPPARD, J., Dyehouse, Benton Hill, both in Horbury, near Wakefield, Yorkshire. Aug. 22, 1935, Nos. 23647/35 and 7779 /36. [Class 78 (i)] A drive for belt conveyers comprises three positively driven drums 11, 12, 14 and an adjustable jockey drum 13 operating between two of the driving drums by means of which the belt 6, which passes arouhd all four drums, is tensioned. The drum 13 is mounted on journals 26 which slide in guides 15, and by bringing this drum sufficiently close to the driving drums the belt 6 can be loosened enough to allow it to stop while the drums 11, 12 and 14 still rotate. The drums 11 and 12 are geared together directly by pinions 16, and the drum 14 is geared through a pinion 17 to the drum 12, the pinion 17 being connected by helical or like gearing to a motor. The drum 13 may be pulled along the guides 15 by manual means comprising a rope &c. 27 wound around a winch drum 28 having a hand lever 29 and a final tensioning linksuspended rack lever 30, or a hydraulic cylinder may be attached either directly to the rope &c. 27 or have the rope passed round a pulley on the piston end and finally attached to a handoperated winch. The guides 15 are pivoted at 38 to the driving head 2. The drum 14 is connected to its shaft 14x, Fig. 3, by a clutch which allows the drum to be freed from the drums 11 and 12 during the tensioning process and thus prevent strain on the belt 6 which would be produced by dragging it over a non- yielding roller. The clutch mechanism comprises a cone 20x slidable on, but fixed rotatably with regard to, the shaft 14x. A hand-operated yoke 25 is connected to dogs 24 taking over a disc 23 by which the cone can be drawn away from its bed against the pressure of a spring 21. A cone 20 fixed on the shaft 14x takes the thrust of the cone 20x through the drum.
