Nov. 17, 1925- W. L. SMITH ADJUSTABLE TOOL HEAD Filed May 28, 1925 gmnntoz h 451111173,
Patented Nov. 17, 1925.
WINFRED L. SMITH, or wnsrnaoon, MAINE.
ADJUSTABLE rootnnan.
Application filed May as, 1925. Serial No. 33,544.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WINFRED L. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vestbrook, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Tool Heads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to hand tools and particularly to the rake and hoe type of tool and has for its object the provision of means by which the rake or hoe head may be adjusted relatively to the handle to permit close approach to the wall of a building or the side of a curb stone or coping.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means by which the adjustment of the head may be expeditiously accomplished while the tool is in use and while it is in working position so that the proper p angle may be readily accomplished to better perform the work and after the tool has been used with the head at an adjusted angle it may be returned to its former position and the work continue without changing the position of the handle.
The construction and operation and advantages of the invention will be described in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the improved tool showing it as a rake,
Figure 2, a top plan view showing the handle partly in section,
Figure 3, a sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 1,
Figure 4, a sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 4 4 of Figure 1, and
Figure 5, a detail view of a hoe head arranged to housed on the tool handle.
In the drawings, similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The handle 1 of the improved tool is tubular as shown and has an extension 2 that is swivelly mounted thereon by means of ferrule 3 secured to the extension 2 by means of a rivet 4c. 5 indicates a rod also secured to extension 2 by means of the rivet-4 and extending tihnough the'bore of the tubular 'eted, to the blade designated 20.
wardly and outwardly. The free ends of,
1-1 indicates an arm extending from the tool head 11 intermediate of the cars 12 and having an upwardly curved portion that is pivotally secured to a rod 15 by means of a removable pin 16 of the same type as the ins 13 heretofore referred to. Rod 15 extends through an opening in the ring 9 into the interior of the sleeve 8 and has on its inner end a yoke 17 the cross head 18 of which is threaded to engage the threads 6 on the rod 5. v
It will be apparent that in using the tool the angle of the head 11 may be quickly adjusted by turning the extension 2 relatively to the handle 1, the threaded connection of the cross head 8 with the end of the rod 5 moving the head 11 to change the angle of the head relatively to the handle.
' In Figure 5 is shown a hoe head that is adapted for use with the handle in which the ears 12 and the'arm 141: are shown riv- In the adaptation of the invention I have shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3, the cars 12 and arm 14 are cast on the head but obviously as indicated in Figure 5 these parts may be made separate and riveted to the tool head if so desired.
What is claimed is e- 1. In a tool, a handle, a head pivotally engaging said handle, an extension of the handle swivelly mounted thereon, a rod secured to said extension and extending through the handle, another rod engaging the head, a yoke on the last mentioned rod, and threaded connection between said yoke a he fir t mentioned r 2. In a tool, a handle, prongs secured to other rod pivotally engaging said head, and and extending from one end of-the handle, a yoke on said rod and having a threaded a head pivotally engaging said prongs an aperture engaging the threads on the first 10 extension of the handle sWiVelly mounted mentioned rod. thereon, a rod secured to said extension and In testimony whereof I aflix my signatransversely through said handle, the free ture. end of said rod being screw threaded, an- WINFRED L. SMITH.
