SCREW DRIVER AND PLACER.
Application filed September 8, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, lsnmrr LEWIS Mnssnnonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at McGraw, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Screw Drivers and Pincers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined screw placer-s and screw drivers and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a compound tool or implement of the char acter stated which is of simple structure and which may be easily and readily transformed from a screw placer to a screw driver and vice versa.
\Vith this object in view the device includes a tubular handle which is flattened at one end portion-and in which pivotally connected jaws are mounted for sliding movement. A screw driver bit is provided at its inner end with a slot which receives the pivot that connects the aws together whereby the said screw driver bit may have limited sliding movement with relation to the jaws. The jaws are provided at their outer ends with recesses adapted to receive the edge portions of the head of a screw and the said recesses are provided at points be tween their ends with sockets. The screw driver bit is provided in the vicinity of its working ends with a transversely disposed pin the ends of which may enter the said sockets whereby the said bit may be held in a projected position with relation to the jaws.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side elevation of the screw placer and screw driver.
The other figures are detailed views of the features of the invention.
The screw placer and driver comprises a tubular handle 1 which is flattened at one end as at 2 whereby the said end portion of the said handle is substantially rectangular in transverse section. The handle 1 is provided at itsside with a longitudinally dis posed slot 3. Jaws i are pivotally connected together at their inner end portions by means of a pin 5 and the said jaws are provided at their outer ends with recesses 6 adapted to receive side portions of the head of a screw (not shown). A screw driver bit 7 is used in combination with the jaws and the said bit is provided at its inner Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 322,279.
end portion with a longitudinally disposed slot 8 which receives the pin 5 whereby the bit 7 may have limited sliding movement with relation to the jaws l. One of the jaws at is provided with a stud 9 which is received within the slot 3 therefore the said jaws may have limited sliding movement with reiation to the handle 1. The bit 7 is provided at a point between its ends with a cross pin 10 which may enter the recesses 6 when the bit 7 is projected with relation to the aws; consequently the said bit when so positioned may be used as a screw driver. W hen the bit 7' is retracted between the aws t the head of a screw may be received in the recesses G and the end of the bit 7 may enter the cross groove in the head of the screw; consequently the implement may be used-tor placing the screw in a piece of timber or other material.
inasmuch as the outer portions of the jaws are outwardly bowed with relation to each other ample space is provided to insert the finger to move the bit 7 with relation to the jaw. I
lVhilo the handle 1 has been described as flattened at one end, and may be preferably constructed in such manner, I do not mean to limit myself to this precise construction, as the handle may comprise a tubular memher that is cross sectionally round throughout. In this instance the jaws have their outer surfaces conforming to the shape of the tubular handle.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. An implement as described comprising a tubular handle having a slot, jaws pivo tally connected together, one of said jaws having a stud which is received in the slot, the jaws being provided with recesses, and a bit slidably mounted with relation to the jaws and having a cross pin adapted to enter the recesses.
2. An implement as described comprising a tubular portion having a flattened end part, said portion being provided with a slot, jaws mounted for movement in the said portion, a pin pivotally connecting the jaws together, said jaws being provided at their outer ends with recesses, a bit having a slot which receives said pin and a cross pin passing through the bit and adapted to enter the recesses in the jaws.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ISAIAH LEWIS MESSENGER.
