To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALooR G. PRINGLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jasper, in the county of Jasper and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Hand Sandpapering and Polishing Machine, ofwhich the fol lowing is a specification.
Thisinvention'relates to new and useful improvements in hand Operated sandpapering and polishingmachines and has for its principal object to provide a simple and efficient. devicewherein arotary member is.
provided for supporting the sandpaper or polishing cloth. I
'A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, wherein the handle for the sand-- papering and polishing machine provides a means for supporting the power driven means provided for rotating the sandpaper or polishing cloth carrying member.
A. still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned,
character, which is of such a construction as to enable the parts to be readily disas-' sembled whenever desired and further permits the sand paper. or polishing cloth to be removed whenever necessary in order to replace the worn sand paper or polishing cloth with a new one.
.A still further object of the invention is to provide a device ofthe above mentioned character, which is simple in construction,
inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this in- Vention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device with parts shown in section, and
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the disc with the gear wheel thereon.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a circular disc which is prefer ably formed of wood, or any other suitable material may be substituted therefor, and I do not W sh to limit my lf t t e pa imr is provided with a central opening in which is supported a sleeve 2. The opening communicates with an enlarged recess 3 formed in the bottom of the disc 1 in the manner lar kind of material to be used. The disc f clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing and the purpose thereof will be presently described. Adapted to extend over the bottom face of the disc 1 is the abrading member 4 which may be either a sandpaper strip or else a polishing cloth and the same is supported in a taut position over the bottom face of the disc by means of the clamping band 5, which fits around the periphery of the band of the disc and clamps the free edges of the abrading member therebetween in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing.
Secured to the :top face of the disc '1' in any suitable manner and arranged centrally thereon is the gear wheel 6.

The lower end of the handle is threaded as shown. at 9, and a suitable nut 10 is adapted for engagementtherewith and the nut 10 'fitsin. the enlarged recess 3 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing. Suitable jamb nuts such as shown at 11 are threaded on the lower end of the handle 8 and extend above the upper face of the disc 1 in the manner as clearly illustrated in the drawing. 7
The handle 8 extends upwardly for a suitable distance and is then disposed laterally as shown at 12. The lateral extension 12 terminates into the downwardly extend ing portion 13, and the downwardly extending portion 13 terminates into the inwardly extending portion 14 which is disposed substantially parallel to the lateral extension 12 and the same terminates at a point adjacent the upwardly extending portion of the handle 8. The inwardly extending portion 14 provides a supporting arm for the bracket 15. The bracket 15 is adapted for longitudinal adjustment on the arm 14 by means of the adjusting and clamping screw 16.
Journaled in the bracket 15 is the forward end of a flexible drive shaft, the 0pposite end being adapted to be connected to a suitable operating means' such as an electric motor or the like (not shown). Mounted on the inner end of the flexibledrive shaft 16 is the cog wheel 17 and the same engages and meshes with the gear wheel 6 in the manner shown in Figure 1.
In operation, the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 1, and when the motor to which the flexible drive shaft 16 is connected, is started, the cog wheel 17 will be rotated and the rotation thereof'will simultaneously cause the rotation of the gear wheel 6 and the disc 1 upon which the same is mounted, The person operating the machine holds the handle and the abrading surface 4L is'placed against the object to be resurfaced. In this "manner the abrading member will be rotated at such a speed as to faclhtate the eflicient and proper operation'of the abrading member and the same will SflVGCOHSlClGlflblB time, as Well as exp'ense;
The simplicity of my device enables the saline to be readily disassembled whenever necessary and the parts are further so 'ar ranged as not to'inte'rfere with the removal of the worn abrading-elementwhenever it "ISdGSHBd to replace the same with a new above -mentioned character, wherein the same forms a means for supporting a bracket in which is mounted the driving "element, the same'ha'ndle maybeused'for "various sizes of abrading discs and the zha'ndle'may be easily and quickly attached to the desired disc Without the loss of much what I claim is An abrading device of the class described, comprising a disc having a central opening provided'therein, an abrading member extendingover the bottom facethereof, means for securing the abrading member on said disc, a gear wheel for the upper face of said "disc, a handle having one end thereof journaledin said opening, sa1d handle comprising an upwardlyextending portion, alateral-"extension'on the'upper end ofit'he upwardly extendingportion, sald lateral extension terminating into adepending portion, and an inwardly extending arm formed on" the "lower end of the depending portion, a bracket mounted onsaid arm, said arm 'eXtending'paral-lel withthe lateral extensionandterminating a distance from the upwardly extendingiportion, adrive shaft journaled in said'bracket, and a cog wheel carried thereby meshing with said gear wheel'for' rotating said disc and the abrading member mounted thereon.
