Be it known that l, JOHN J. STnvENsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State el Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Clothes Driers, of which the'f'ollowing is a specification.

rIhis invention relates to improvements in clothes driers, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a plurality of bars adapted to be'individually adjusted horizontally to receive the garments to be supported, and collectively disposed in vertical position to occupy less space when not in use.

Figure 1 is a side elevation in section on the line 1-1 of Figure 3.

Figure 2 is a front elevation with the clothes suspension bars in vertical or inoperative position.

Figure 3 is a plan view, with the suspension bars extended or disposed in position to receive the garments.

The improved device includes a support or base formed of a plate adapted to be attached to a wall or the like indicated at 11, by screws 12 or other fastening devices.

rlhe plate 10 is formed with a relatively large opening indicated at 13, and extending forwardly 'from the plate at the ends of the opening are arms 14:, each having a longitudinal slot 15. Extending from the base plate 10 at the upper edge of the opening 13 is a forwardly directed downturned stop lip or catch 16, as shown.

A head member forms a part of the improved device, and includes spaced portions 18 and 19 and connecting portion 17 the portion 19 extending in advance of the portion 18, as indicated.

Depending from the portion 19 of the head member are perforated ears 2O through which a pivot pin 21 extends with the terminals extending through the slots 15, with the outer ends enlarged as shown at 22, to prevent the separation of the pin from the slots and ears.

By reference to Figures 2 land 3 it will be noted that recesses 23 are formed in the ends of the opening 13 to permit the heads 22 of the pin 21 to pass when the head member is disposed in position.

The portions 18 and 19 of the head member are provided with a plurality of alined apertures to receive cotter pins 24, or the like, to each of which a garment supporting bar 25 is swingingly coupled and operative between the spaced head members.

Extending from the portion 18 of the head member is an outwardly curved lip 26 to engage beneath the catch 16, as shown more clearly in Figure 1. By this means the head member together with its suspension bars 25 may be tilted on the pivot pin 21 and the latter adjusted in the slot 15 and the catch 26 inserted beneath the lip 16, and the head and its bars thus retained in horizontal position, and the bars adjusted laterally to any required extent on their pivots 24.

In assembling this drier, the head member with the bars 25 removed therefrom, is inserted through the aperture 13 formed in the plate 10, with the open side of the head entering iirst through the aperture.'

The pivot pin or-bar 21 having been previously fixed in the ears which depend from the lower side of the head, will enter the open ends of the slot 15 formed in the arms or extended portions 14:. The head will then ride forward upon the extended portions until the upstanding lip at the rear of the head abuts the depending lip 16 formed upon the plate 10. The ends of the bars can now be placed in position in the head and the cotter pins or holding devices 2d passed therethrough to secure the bars in position.

When the device is not required for use the bars 25 may be swung together in substantially parallel relation and by slightly tilting upwardly the outer ends of the bars the lip 26 can be disengaged from the catch 16. The pins 21 are then drawn along the slots 15 with the head and bars until the lip 26 is free from the catch 16, when the bars and head can be dropped into the position represented in Figure 2.

The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured, partly of wood and partly of metal, or wholly of metal.

lThe supporting plate and its slotted arms can be of cast aluminum, while the head member together with its ears 20 may also be of a single casting of aluminum or the like.

For the purpose of illustration the device is shown With four of the garment suspension bars 25, but the head member' may be constructed to hold any required number ot the bars.

The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specifications, but it Will be understood that modifications Within the scope of the claims may be made in the construction AWithout departing Vfrom the principle of the invention or sacrilicing any o1" its advantages.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. A device of the character described comprising, a base member having an open ing therethrough, a forwardly and downwardly directed lip at the top edge of said opening, longitudinally slotted spaced arms extending' from said base one on each side ol said opening and having the slots therein merging with said opening, rack bars, a holder for' said bars, a lug at the rear of said holder adapted to engage under said lip, spaced depending ears carried by said holder, anda rod having a head upon each` end, carried by said ears and engageable in said slots, the heads of said rods bearing against the outer Vfaces of said arms.

2. A device of the character described comprising, a base member haring an opening therethrough, a forwardly and downwardly directed lip at the top edge of said opening, longitudinally slotted spaced arms extending from said base one on each side of said opening and having the Slots therein merging with said opening, rack bars, a holder for said bars, a lug at the rear of said holder adapted to engage under' said lip, spaced depending ears `carried by vsaid holder, and a rod having a head upon each end, carried by said ears and engageable in said slots, the heads Yof said -rods bearing against the outer faces of said Yarms, said holder and rod carried thereby being adapted to pass through said opening, when assembling the device, the said rod ends enr tering the open ends of said slots.
