Be it known that I, Flinin-:liron M. Gon- DARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn in the county of Kings State ot' 'ew York` have invented certain new and useful Improvenents in Antiinduction Devices ot which the *following is a tulhclear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to anti-induction devices its object being` to provide a compact and convenient arranement ot' means .tor preventing inagnecic disturbances in adjacently placed electro-nagnetic devices, which means is readily removable to allow tor easy access, inspection, adjustment and repair ot' such apparatus.
hen two pieces ot apparatus, such as relays, are placed near one another, the magnetisn of the one affects the other. If the magnetism ot' the one is changing a current is induced in the other and a condition exists which is termed cross-talk. It the magnetism ot the one is not changing but remains stationary, the characteristics of the other are atiected so that it may be energized by a smaller number of ampere turns or it may require a larger number of ampere turns, or its releasing conditions may be changed so that it may not operate in the nanner tor which it designed and adjusted in which case, a condition exists which is termed cross-fire. Through extensive experiments, it has` been discovered that shells ot conducti material placed about relays will prevent cross-talk, but will not prevent cross-fire unless such shells are also made of nagnetic material. hen rows of relays which are not in talking circuits are placed adjacent one another an( cross-talk is not objectionable, it has been itoui'id that a simple sheet of ina-gnetic inaterial ilaced between the rows is an effective shield against cross-fire. Hence, an apparatus rack comprising means for removably mounting the shields between rows of apparatus has been devised as a convenient and eii'ective means ter inonnting great numbers of relays and other electronagnetie devices and overconing the ditiieulties contingent on such close association which have heretofore been encountered.
In the drawings, Fig, l is a side sectional view, Fig. 2 is a-'ront view, and Fig. 3 is a top view showing the organization of standards apparatus nonnting plates, shield holders and shields. Fig. 4 is a sectional perspective view showing the method of se curing the shield holders when the apparatus niounting plates are secured to the back of the standards; and Fig. 5 is a sectional perspective View showing` the method of se-- cnring the shield holders whenthe apparatus niounting plates are Secured to the frontoT the standards.
The standards l may be in the form ot I beams as shown in the drawings, or any other convenient .term ot structural steel. Secured to the I beams are apparatus mounting plates 2 on which are mounted rows of relays 3 and l. The fiat type relay such as 3 may be secured to the mounting plates by screws and the round type relay such as %t may be bolted to the mounting plates. Channel bars 5 bent in the form ot' an L are riveted to securing plates 6, which are secured to the mounting plates by the same screws that attach the mounting plates to the I beams. These channel bars may be Secured either to the back ot' the nounting plates as shown in Fig. et, or to the front of the mounting plates as shown in Fig. 5, so that they will protrude between the rows of relays in the same direction the axes ot the relays and form a convenient means for holding the magnetic shields. These shields 7 comprise a plate of nag netic material long' enough to fit in the recesses ot the channel bars Secured to the back and front edges ot this shield 7 are woodcn or fiber strips 8 which may be used as desig nation strips and on which characters representing the position of a relay in its circuit may be printed. In order to hold the plate 7 securely in place springs 9 are riveted near the ends of the plote and serve to hold the shield tirn'ily within. the recesses of the Channels, Extensions 10 of the securing plate G are provided to prevent the shield 7 from being pushed too 'tar backward. hen the channel bars 5 are Secured to the front ot' the nonnting plates 2, as shown in Fig. 5, the extensions lO also serve to space adjacent nonnting plates so that the designation strip 8 may pass between thena This organization, as described, provides for the ready removal of the shield 7 for inspeetion, adjustment and repair of the relays.
