R. ARKWRIGHT ET AL UNCOUPLING DEVICE FOR FREIGHT CARS Original Filed May 14. 1920 Imavmgs Rruum r 1W! "5%?" Patents-cl Nov. 3,

UNOOUPLING DEVICE FOR FREIGHT CARS.
Original application fi ed May 14, 1920. Serial No. 381,311.
Di ided and this pplication filed December 14, 1920. fierial Ne, $30,671.
To uZZ whom it away concern:
Be it known that we, REUBEN ARK- wnioi-rr and ISAK MonLLna, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residents of the city of New Glasgow, Province of Nova Scotia, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Unconpling Devices for Freight Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in uncoupling devices for freight cars, and is a divisional application of United States application Serial No. 381,311, filed May 11th, 1920, and the objects of the invention are to permit of the link mechanism of the uncoupling device automatically adjusting itself relatively to the position of the coupler pin, when the coupler is in its inner or outer position, and generally to adapt the uncoupling device to better perform the functions required of it.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists essentiallyof the improved construction particularly described 25 and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary end elevation of a freight car showing the improved uncoupling device mounted thereon.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of the freight car showing the improved uncoupling device thereon.
Figure 3 is a detail in plan showing the arm of the uncoupling rod.
Figure 4: another detail showing an alternative form of end.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings; A represents a freight car of any usual description provided with a coupler B carrying a coupler pin C, and as the several parts so far enumerated are well known in the art it is not deemed necessary to further describe the same.
According to the present invention a derice is utilized for actuating the pin C and this consists of an uncoupling rod formed at the outer end with an offset hand grip 11, the inner end being bent at right angles to the rod to form an arm 12 which overhangs the pin C, the arm 12 being bent laterally at right angles to form a retaining end 12.
The uncoupling rod 10 is journalled in suitable brackets 14: and as the hand grip 11 is rotated the arm 12 will be rotated in a vertical plane.
The arm 12 is connected to the pin C by a link 15 provided with a transverse arm 16 which passes through and pivotally engages with the head of the said pin, and the arms of the link are provided at the upper end with hooked portions 17 which are bent around and embrace the arm 12.
It will be evident that as the arm 12 is rotated in a vertical plane the link 15 will slide on the same and will automatically adjust itself relatively to the position of the pin C. The outward movement of the link 15 is restricted by the turned end 12 In Figure 41 an alternative form of un coupling rod is illustrated in which the arm 12 is provided at the outer end with a turned back portion 12 which forms an elongated orifice and the link 15 is slidably mounted on the arm 12 but the offset end 12 of the arm controls the sliding movement of the link and only allows a displacement sufficient to permit of the link 15 automatically adjusting itself relatively to the couples pin C.
lVhen a car equipped with this type of uncoupling device is in use, the operator stands at the side of the car and actuates the hand grip 11 to rotate the uncoupling rod so that the link 15 controls the movement of the pin C.
In the alternative form of end shown in Figure 4: the end 12 after being turned laterally is bent to form an elongated eye.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely difierent embodiments of our invention within the scope of the claims constrncted without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What we claim as our invention is:
In a device of the class described, the combination with a coupler provided withv a locking pin having an eye, of an operating rod having an outwardly extending arm, the end of said arm being bent backwardly for forming a link retaining loop, and a single link having at its lower end an elongated 100p supported at both sides and at its upper end hooks turned inwardly for engaging the arm, the loop on the arm permitting sliding movement ofthe link in 1611- gitndinal direction but limiting the amount of movement both forw'zirdly and rear- 10 Wardly.
In Witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands.
REUBEN ARKWRIGHT. ISAK MOELLER.
