UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REUBEN ARKWRIGHT AND ISAK MUELLER, NEW GLASGOW, NOVA SCQTIA, CANADA ASSIGNOR-S, BY ivrnsnn ASSIGNMENTS, TO" RAILWAY DEVICES COMPANY, or 'sr. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION or ivrrssoum.
UNCOUPLING DEVICE FOR FREIGHT CARS.
Application filed May 14, 1920.
To all 4.0710922 it may concern Be it known that we, REUBEN ARKWRIGHT and ISAK Montana, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residents of the city of New Glasgow, Province of Nova Scotia, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Uncoupling Devices for Freight Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in uncoupling devices for freight cars, and the objects of the invention are to permit of the link mechanism of the uncoupling device automatically adjusting itselt' relatively to the position of the coupler pin, when the coupler is in its inner or outer position, and generally to adapt the uncoupling device to better perform the functions required of it.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists essentially of the improved construction particularly described and set forth in the "following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.
111 the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary end elevation of a freight car showing the improved uncoupling device mounted thereon.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of the freight car showing the improved uncoupling device thereon.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the uncoupling rod and link slidably mounted thereon.
Figure l is a front elevation oi. the link, the dotted line showing the position of the arms of the link prior to closing.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the uncoupling rod and link, the dotted line show ing the several parts in adjusted position.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a freight car of any usual description provided with a coupler 13 carrying a coupling pin C, and as the several parts so far enumerated being well known in the art it is not deemed necessary to further describe the same.
According to the present invention a device is utilized for actuating the pin C and this consists of an uncoupling rod 10 formed at the outer end with an offset hand grip 11,
Serial No. 381,311.
the inner end being bent at right angles to the rod to form an arm 12 which overhangs the pin C, the arm 12 being split at the outer end and bent in opposite lateral directions to form a T-shaped head 13.
The uncoupling rod 10 is journalled in suitable brackets 14- and as the hand grip 11. is rotated the arm 12 will be rotated in a vertical plane.
The arm 12 is connected to the pin C by a link 15 provided with a transverse arm 16 which passes through and pivotally en gages with the head of the said pin, and the arms of the link are provided at the upper end with hooked portions 17 which are bent around and embrace the arm 12.
It will be evident that as the arm 12 is rotated in a vertical plane the link 15 will slide on the same and will automatically adjust itself relatively to the position of the pin 0. The outward movement of the link 15 is restricted by the T-shaped head 13 of the arm 12.
In Figure 6 an alternative form of uncoupling rod is illustrated in which the arm 12 is provided at the outer end with a turned back portion 19, which forms an elongated orifice and the link 15 is slidably mounted on the arm 12 but the oifset end 19 of the arm controls the sliding movement of the link and only allows a displacement suflicient to permit of the link 15 automatically adjusting itself relatively to the coupler pin 0 lVhen a car equipped with this type of uncoupling device is in use, thepperator stands at the side of the car and actuates the hand grip 1.1 to rotate the uncoupling rod so that the link 15 controls the movement of the pin C.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparent-h widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What we claim as our invention is In a device of the class described, the conibination with an actuating rod, of an arm carried thereby, said arm being split and spread at its outer end to form a T-shaped separable for engagement of the link with the arm..
In witness whereof we have hereunto set 10 our hands.
REUBEN ARKWRIGHT. ISAK MOELLER.
