BOAT DAVIT.
Application led January 13, 1925.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VARREN F. MILLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in-Boat Davits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boat davits of the type shown in my Patent Number 1,329,921, dated February 3, 1920, and the primary object of the invention is to provide such a mechanism with various improvements as hereinafter described.
As is well known, the function of boat davits is to raise and lower relatively small boats to and from the deck of a ship. In performing this operation it is essential that the boat be held clear of the" deck, particularly in the lowering operation. I provide means herein in the form of extensions on the davits for tsupporting/the*boat in a positio ete-fromlhcndediduring the lowering operation and the providing of this construction which keeps the boat clear of the deck in such operation is one of the objects of my invention.

This means, as will be more fully hereinafter described, includes a novel collapsible support, preferably of the toggle joint type, and means for simultaneously controlling the position of the support or rest and the boat locking means.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the features of construction and operation set forth in. the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. In such drawings annexed hereto and forming a part of this specification, I have shown certain specific embodiments of my invention, but it will be understood that the invention can be otherwise embodied and that the draw ings are not to be construed as defining or limiting the scope of the invention, the claims appended to this specification being relied upon for that purpose.

Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my boat davit mechanism supporting a boat on the deck of a ship.

Fig. 4 is an end elevation, partially in section, of the mechanism shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a like view but showing the parts in the boat releasing position.
Referring more specifically to the drawings by reference characters, 1 indicates the boat deck of a ship having a pair of davit posts 2 and 3 lmounted thereon in spaced relation and spaced a desired distance from the outboard edge of the deck. Extending horizontally along the posts is a keel plate 4; upon which is pivotally mounted at 5 a keel rest 6 for the boat. This rest is formed with a 'horizontal boat supporting surface 7 and a vertical ledge 8 adapted to be engaged by the inboard side of the keel 9 of a boat 10.
As illustrated, the side of the rest 6 oppo site the pivot 5 is adapted to be supported by a pair of toggle joints which consist of two plates 11 and 12 hinged together at 13 and pivoted to the rest 6 and deck 1 respectively at liand 15. When the togglcs are in the straight or supporting position,
as in Fig. 4, the rest 6 isliold in the horizontal boat supporting position and when the toggles are released, as in Fig. 5, the rest 6 is tipped outwardly to permit the boat to slide therefrom.
The position of the toggles is controlled by a pair of bars 16 pivoted to the toggles at 17. The inner ends of these bars are connected by a hand manipulated rod 18. Mounted for rocking movement on the rod is a latch member 19 having an operating handle 20. rThe latch member is adapted to fit over a staple 21 in the keel block 4 and to be held thereon, in the position shown in Fig. 4, by a pin 22.
Pivotally secured to the bars 16 at 23 is a pair of boat securing or locking bars 24C. These bars extend upwardly through slots in the rest 6 and cooperate with the ledge 8 to securely lock the boat in position on the rest. When it is desired to lower the boat the pin 22 is removed, the latch 19 raised and the bars 16 drawn backwardly by grasping the rod 18. rlhe toggles are thus released and the rest dropped to the position illustrated in Fig. 5. A pair of stop members 25 are mounted on the deck on the outboard side of each toggle plate to limit the outboard movement of the toggles.
Then in position on the deck, the boat is normally protected by a cover 26. When the boat is in place this cover can be accurately adjusted thereon b y means of the screws 27. This cover in no way interferes with the lowering of the boat since the boat drops freely therefrom when the toggles are released.
The davits 2S and 29 are pivoted to the lower ends of the posts at 30. The upper ends of the posts and the free ends of the davits carry sheaves 3l and 32 over which ride the boat-lifting cables 33. These cables at one end are attached to the boat and the other ends thereof are wound over the top of the posts on the drums 34. These drums are operated in the usual manner by winch pinions 35. The drums are connected by a rod or shaft connecting each winch in the saine shaft 36 on which is a break drum 37 controlled by a handle 38.
When lowering the boat from the position shown in dash lines in Fig. 5, the boat will clear the deck sufficiently to avoid any difculty. In lowering the boat it is particularly important that same will clear the deck sutiiciently to avoid any possibility of accident. To perform this function, I mount a pair of extensions or hooks 39 on the free ends of the davits. Cooperating with these hooks is a pair of elements a() secured to the boat and having means adapted to engage over the hooks for the lowering operation. When the boat is lowered, the saine will hang from the hooks, thereby being swung` further from the outboard edge of the deck than if hung from the sheaves 32.
It is believed that the constriuztion and operation of my improvements as above delined will be clear without further description herein.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support, a pair of vertically swinging davits thereon, tackle sets carried by the davits and adapted to be secured to and support a boat, and means on the free ends of the davits for supporting aboat in position further removed from the said support than when supported by the tackle sets and so arranged as to he automatically released in a manner supporting the boat entirely on the tackle set-s when the boat is swung clear.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination .of a support, a pair of davit posts thereon, a pair of vertically swinging davits cooperating with the posts, tackle sets carried by the davits over the davit posts and adapted to be secured to and support a boat, a pair of hooks carried on the free ends of the davits beyond the tackle sets, and means for supporting a boat` from the said hooks in a manner automatically releasing the boat when the boat has swung clear.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support, a pair of vertically swinging davits thereon, a keel supporting rest mounted on a substantially horizontal pivot adjacent the davits, locking means movable relative to the rest and adapted to'secure a boat in place on the rest, and means independent of the davits for moving and releasing the locking means relative to the rest and moving the rest on its pivot to a position permitting lowering of the boat by the davits.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support, a pair of vertically swinging davits thereon, a keel supporting rest mounted on a' substantially horizontal pivot adjacent the davits, locking means extending upwardly through the rest for securing a boat in place on the rest, and means independent of the davits for simultaneously releasing the locking means and dropping the rest downwardly about its pivot to a position permitting lowering of the boat by the davits.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support, a pair of vertically swinging davits thereon, a keel supporting rest pivotally supported at one side adjacent the davits, toggle means supporting the opposite side of the rest, and means for holding the toggle means in a position supporting the rest and for breaking the same to permit the rest to drop.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a support, a pair of vertically swinging davits thereon, a keel supporting rest pivotally supported at one side adjacent the davits, jointed means supporting the opposite side of the rest, locking means movable relative to the rest and adapted to secure a boat in place on the rest, and means independent of the davits for moving and releasing the locking means relative to the rest and breaking the jointed means to permit the rest to drop.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support, a pair of vertically swinging davits thereon, a keel. supporting rest pivotally supported at one side adjacent the davits, toggle means support-- ing the opposite side of the rest, a controlling bar connected to the toggle means, and locking means connected to the bar and adapted to secure a boat in place on the rest, movement of the bar being adapted to both release the locking means and break the toggle means to permit the rest to drop.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support, a pair of Vertically swinging davits thereon, a keel supporting rest pivotally supported at one Side adjacent the davits, toggle means supporting the opposite side of the rest, a controlling bar connected to the toggle means, locking means connected to the bar and adapted to secure a boat in place on the rest, and means cooperating With the bar for securing both the toggle and locking means in their boat holding and locking position, release and movement of the bar being adapted to Withdraw the locking means and release the toggle.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support, a pair of Vertically swinging davits thereon, a keel supporting rest mounted on a substantially horizontal pivot adjacent the davits, means for supporting the rest in a horizontal position, means extending upwardly through the rest andadapted to lock the boat in place on the rest, and a unitary means for simultaneously releasing the locking means and dropping the rest independently of the davits.
