OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR TO MAYER LIFE BOAT C6.
1 INQ, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
Application filed December 31, 1921. Serial No. 526,146.
.To all whom it may coho-era:
Be it known that I, SIM EMIL AILLBIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifeboat Davits, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to improvements in life boat davits.
The object of the invention is to provide clavits by which a life boat may be swlmg a vessel,
and lowered from a vessel in an expeditious and reliable manner.
. It is also an object of the invention that the davits may be supported or secured to the deck of a vessel in a substantial manner. It is a further object of the invention that the davits be exceedingly simple in construe-- tion and breakage.
Other objects and objects relating to details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts will hereinafter appear in the"'detailed description to follow.
parts thereof not subject to easy Theinvention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying which Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustratdrawmgs, in
ing a pair of davits when in proper osition for lowering or raising life boats rom Figure 2 is an end elevation of the same and showing in dotted lines the position of the booms of a davit when operated for swinging a life boat from the deck of a vessel,
Figure 3 is a grouped view showing the end sections of a boom,
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a boom support or standard,
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the same, -Fig'ure 6 is an elevation of the same,
Figure 7 is a detailed perspectiveview of the actuating screw for lowering the davit booms,
Figure 8' is a sectional detail view show-.
taken substantially on the line 11-11 of Figure 10, V I
Figure 12 is a longitudinal sectional View of a collar associated with the actuating screw shown in Figure 7, Figure 13 is a similar view of a collar carried byjeach of the ends of the hub shaft shown in Figure 10,'aricl Figures 14 and 15 are a side elevation and end elevation respectively of a gypsy associated with the booms. Referring [O the'drawings more particm larly, A indicates generally a davit ope being positioned at each end of the phirality of boats E, and each'davit including-J a boom B which supports at its uper enda block and fall C. More particularly each davit A comprises a supporting frame or base generally indicated by the reference numeral 10, as-shown in detail in Figure 4, and consisting in acasting, the vertical portions 11 of which are substantially parallel and the upper portion 12 inclined with respect to'the base portion 13. The frame is formed with suitable rear and fori ward base plates 11 and 12 respectively, each of which are provided with openings as at 13 through which screw bolts may be extended for securin the frame to the deck of a vessel. The base portion 13 is formed with a bearing lug 15 through which the extremities of the furcations 16 of the boom B are pivotally connected by the means of a pin 17. The furcations 16 of the boom B straddle the upper portion 12 of the frame 10 and near their upper ends have journaled therebetween the stub shaft 17, Figure 8, said stub shaft extending through suitable openings 18 formed in the furcations 16, and said openings bev ing preferably lined as indicated at 19.
The stub shaft 17 has its intermediate portion formed with an enlargement 20 which terminates at each end in a flange 21 adapted to abut the bearing linings 19.
Also this enlarged portion 20 is formed collar 27 the operating screw is formed with an enlargement 28 which is adapted to fit within the central opening 29 of the of the'openin 29 of the hub shaft 30 there is formed a co lar 33, and the ends 34 of the hub shaft 30 are journaled in the projections 35 of the stand 10, said projections be ing each formed with suitable and ali ned openings for journaling said ends 0 the hub shaft as indicated at 36. A collar such as shown in detail in Figure 13 indicated by the reference numeral 37 is positioned upon each outer end 34 of the hub shaft 30 and so held by the means of an insertion of a pin in the openings 38. As is obvious from this construction the screw 24 may freely rotate and also free to swing in a vertical plane upon the hub shaft 30. The screw 24 is protected by the means ofa plate covering 89, said plate covering having its ends secured as at 39 to the frame 10.
Also theforward leg 11 of the frame 10 is formed with a lug 38' which has an inner inclined surface asshown in Figure 2, and is adapted to seat the boom B when lowered to its dotted line position as likewise shown in Figure 2.
The upper end of each boom B is turned inwardly as at and terminates in an eye 41 with which the clevis 42 of the upper sheeve 43 of each block and fall may be connected. The lower sheeve 44 of each block and fall also carries the usual clevis as at 45 which is connected with a hook 46 carried at each end of the boats E.
To each frame 10 there is secured a gypsy 48 which is shown in detail in Figures 14 and 15 and comprises a hollow cylindrical portion 49 having formed upon each end a flange 50 and its end closed as at 5]., and said closed end formed with a pair of wings 52 which extend at right angles thereto and are suitably braced by the plates 53. The wings 52 are sufficiently spaced so thatthc same may receive a vertical rib 54 of the stand 10 and so secured by the means of bolts indicated at 55, Figure l. Also'a vertical rib 56 of the rear leg ll of the stand 10 is formed with an eye or opening 57 through which there isextended a bar 58, Figures 1 and 4. The free end 59 of the rope or cable forming each block and fall C may be held by windin the same about its associated gypsy 48 a cw turns and further securing the same to the bar 58, shown in Figure 1.
In the operation of the present apparatus when it is dcsirodto lower a boat the blot-h and falls are first oprralcd for raising the uppermost lJOut with "which tlu-y are conward! position shown in Figure 2. At this time nected, s6 the game clear the boat therebeneath and 'then -the crank 26 operated for moving tli booms' B outuntil they assume the dotted line each boom will rest upon its'seat 38 and will so bold and support the boatin, a rigid andpositive manner. The block and fall 0 may now be further operated for lowering the boat into the water. When it is desired to raise the boat then the blockand falls are again operated to raise the boat from the. water to the position shown -in dotted lines in Figure 2, and the crank 26 is then turned for'raising the booms B to their. original position. Dur ngthis operation the free ends 59 of the ropes forming the block and falls are of course.
made secure by the means of the gypsies 48 and the bars 58. It is of course to be obsegved that the gypsies 48 are utilized in the usual manner for letting out the block and falls and taking the same up during the lowering and raising'of the boat suspended thereby.
While'I have shown and described the preferredv form of my invention I wish it to be understood that I am aware of the fact that the construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be changed by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention, as indicated bythe appended claims.
- I claim:
