Description

Patented Oct. 20, I 1925.
UNITED STATES I 1,557,872 PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY M. PFLAGER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO COMMONWEALTHSTEEL COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
RAILWAY 'rn oK.
, Application filed March 19, 1924. Serial No 700,323.
, My invention relates to railway car trucks and consists in an improved mounting of a swinging bolster.
The object of my invention is to provide pivotal suspension means for a bolster which maybe applied to spaced transomso'of a truck and will include suspension links between which the bolster is located and means preventing frictional contact of the links and the bolster.
This invention is also shown and described in my copending application Serial Number 569,145, filedJune 7, 1922, of which the present is a continuation in part.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate my invention- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a truck containing my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse section through the truck shown in Figure 1.
Figures 3 and 4 illustrate modifications of my invention and are referred to hereinafter. a
The truck includes the usual wheels 1. axles 2, equalizers 3, and a frame 4 carried by the equalizers through springs 5. frame includes two horizontally spaced transoms 6 and the upper faces of these transoms are adapted to provide bearings for the ends of pins 7 which span the space between the transoms and from which are pivotally suspended links 8. These links .swingingly support the spring plank 9 which carries springs 10 supporting bolster .11 upon which the car .body (not shown) is mounted; The top surface of the ends of bolster 11 is below the upper ends of links 8 and below pin-7 and I utilize a rigid member extending between the links of each pair to space the latter transversely of the bolster to such an extent that there will be no en gagement between the links and the bolster to chafe either of these members and to interfere with the swinging movement of the bolster.
In'the preferred construction, this rigid The membeiwis shown as a cylindrical sleeve 12 surrounding pin 7 and preferably secured to the latter either by being tightly fitted thereon or'pinned thereto as indicated at 17.
As theends ofpins 7 are held against axial movement by their saddles on the transoms, the links are also held in the position shown and spaced from tlie transoms as well as the bolster.
In Figure 3 the spacing member consists 'in a short angle iron 13 removablysecured toithepin 14 by means of bolts 15.
In Figure 4 the links are held in predetermined relation to each other by-means of cotter pins 16.
With any of these constructions, it will be impossible for the upper ends of the links to approach closer-to each other than the distance provided by the spacing member which, however, can be removed for shortening or for the substitution of a longer mem ber or for the removal of the pin from the linksif the bolster is to be removed from the truck.
Obviously. the details of my invention may be modified other than as shown; Without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the following claims.
I claim: v
1. In combination with a truck frame, its wheels and axles, transoms integral with the side members, of said truck frame, a bolster arranged between said transoms, swinging links 'for supporting said bolster, a pin passing through the upper ends of said links and being. seated upon said transoms and held against longitudinal movement, and a lsleeve secured on said pin for spacing the said links, and means removably secured to said pin for spacing said links apart- {)hereonso as to clear said bolster and memers. In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature this 15 day of March, 1924.
H. M. PFLAGER.
