UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BOONE V. E. JOHNSON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR T COMMONWEALTH STEEL COMPANY, OF GRANITE CITY, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEWJERSEY.
RAILWAY TRUCK.
Application led January 18, 1926. Serial No. 81,903.
My invention relates to an improvement in railway trucks and has for its object the iinproved cushioning of the load with reference to the wheels.A Drawings.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a truck embodying my invention.-
Fig.'2' is a side elevation of the same, the sidewall being broken away and parts being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is aplan view of the truck illustrating the location and arrangement ofthe spring elements and equalizer bars when the auxiliar springs are omitted; e. g., as used inv freigiit car or other purposes where the utmost resiliency or riding quality is unnecessary. -Fi 4: is a sectional view of the construe# tion lllustrated in Fig. 3, taken on the line 4r4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is an end view of one of the hollow wheel pieces of the truck.
Deamptzon. While I have illustrated the embodiment of my invention in a six-wheel truck, it is equally eiiicient in trucks of two wheels or any multiple thereof.
The drawings depict a truck-frame A of usual construction, having at its sides hollow wheel-pieces B with depending pairs of pedestals 6-6 for the accommodation of journal-boxes 7, the top of each of said journalboxes 7 having a vertical-ly lprojecting rib 8 for contact or' engagement with the lower f face of the standard irregularly curved (or .off-set) equalizer-bar 9 (see Fig. 2) o r standard straight equalizer-bar 10 (see Fig. 4).
On top of these equalizer-bars 9 or 10, and
interposed between said equalizer-bars 9 or` 10 and the truck-frame A I provide my primary spring-elements C," here illustrated as leafsprings-,/each having a .spring-band 11 fitting at its top loosely between lugs or stops 12--12` depending in pairs from the truckframe A and serving to prevent longitudinal displacement of the spring-bands I provide any eicient antiffrictlon means, interposed between the 'ends (or one end) of the spring-elements C andA the equalizerbar 9 or 10 upon which it rides, and for that purpose have shown in the drawings frictribution for freight cars and the like. For
passenger c ar service where the utmost rid,
Ving quality is desired I' employ an auxiliary .spring-element D, here illustrated as a helical spring, interposed between the primaryr spring element C and the equalizer-bar 9, its base eing mounted on the bar 9 and its top carrying a grooved cap 14,.the groove in which is arranged to recelve the bottom of the spring-band'll.
My invention may be embodied in any form of truck-frame and may be modified V and varied as to its structure and positioning in. many ways without departure from my actual invention as defined in theclaims of this application.'
@Zaijma I claim 1. In a railway truck, a truck frame having journal-boxes; equalizer bars mounted on said boxes; semi-elliptic spring elements interposed between the truck frame and the e ualizer bars, havingsliding engagement with said equalizer bars; and helical spring elements interposed between the semi-'elliptic spring elements andthe equalizer bars.
2. In a railway truck, in combination, a truckframe; journal boxes mounted in said frame; equalizers mounted on said journalv boxes; leaf springs supporting lthe truck and contacting at their ends with said equalizers;
and helical springs interposed between the said equalizers and said leaf springs.
3. In a railway truck` in combination; a truck frame having hollow-wheel piecesg' journal boxes mounted in said frame; equalizers supported o n said journal boxes; leaf springs mounted vupon said equalizers and bavingslidable engagement therewith, said equalizers and leaf springs being mounted within said hollow wheel pieces; a spring band mounted von each of said leaf springs:
.spring elements interposed "between said equalizers and said leaf springs, each of said spring elements arranged to contact w1th the spring band ofthe opposing leaf spring.
4. Inia railway truck the combination of spring elements interposed 'between the leaf a truck frame;l journal Vrboxes mounted in springs and the eralzerbars; anda voved said frame; equalizers supported onv said capvmounted .at t e top of each 01E t e last- ]'ournal boxes; leaf springs sup orting the 11a/med spring elements, its groove arranged weight of the frame and mounte -upon said to receive the bottomof'one of said :spring l5 equalizers and having sliding engagement.v bands. l j with said equalizers at on'e or both ends; In testimony whereof I"have hereuntouafa spring band mounted on each of said leaf xed my signature. springs;v stops depending from the truck 10 frame vend engagmg' saldvspring bands; v l vBOONE V.YI[.`JOI-INSOIIT..` i
