Be it known that I, FREDERICK SUM- MERS, a citizen of the, United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have inventedcert-ain new and useful Improvements in Pencil Clips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention provides a clip designed specifically for use in connection with a lead pencil to prevent loss thereof and to hold the same in convenient position for ready use, said clip being light, cheap and effective, and comprising a single length of wire which is bent into the required shape.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.

WVhile the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departingfrom the nature of the invention.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.

The numeral 1 denotes a lead pencil which is provided adjacent one end with a rubber band 2 which provides in effect a stop to limit the mo-vemento-f theclip. I

The clip forming the subject matter of the invention consists of a single length of wire which may be of any gauge and finished ,in any preferred way, said wire being resilient to give a spring action to the clip. The wire blank is doubled upon itself and folded to provide complemental members 3 and 4 between which the pencil 1 is gripped. The member 4 consitutes a and easily removed therefrom when required shank, its. end portion 5 being outwardly deflected to form a guide for the ready entrance of a side of the pocket or other article to which the pencil may be attached by means of the clip. The elements comprising the shank 4 are brought'close together and are made fast by solder 6 or other suitable binder. The member 3 is subopposite sides of the pencil 1, and the elements comprising the member 3 are inwardly crimped adjacent the curved end 7 as indicated at 9 whereby to engage oppo- "site sides of thepencil as indicated most clearly in Figure 3 and prevents lateral displacement thereof.

The clip being constructed of wire is light, cheap and, neat in appearance and may be readily bent into the shape substantially as shown so as to engage the sides of the pencil and grip the same securely and prevent displacement, while at the same'time enabling the pencil to be readily attached to the pocket or other part of the wearing apparel for use.

lVhat is claimed is V V 1. A pencil clip comprising complemental members, the front member being substantially of Uform and having its closed end transversely curved to receive a pencil and the side elements adjacent the closed end inwardly crimped to engage opposite sides of a pencil.

2. A pencil clip consisting of a length of wire doubled upon itself and folded to provide complemental members, one of the members constituting a shank and having its outer end outwardly deflected and the other member being substantially of U-form and having its closed endcurved and the side elements adjacent the closed end inwardly crimped, the elements comprising the shank being secured by means of a binder.

3. A pencil clip consisting of a single length of wire doubled upon'itself and folded to provide complemental members, the

one forming a shank the end of which is outwardly deflected and the other member being substantially of U-form and having its closed end curved and the side elements adjacent the closed end inwardly crimped, and having the portions connecting the members at one end curved and outwardly flared, said outwardly flared portions providing a recess to receive a pencil, and the shank and inwardly crimped portions of the 10 U-shaped member being adapted to clamp the pencil.
