WILIJIELM R. GUIBERSON, DE LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA; ASSIG'NOR' TOTHEGUIBERe son CORPORATION, ornnrnes; Texas; A CORPORATION onqnntnwean;
Application filed July 21, 1924. Serial No. 727,234.
To all whom it may; concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAIVLR. GUIBER- sort, a citizen of the United States of America residing at Los Angeles, in the 5. county. of. Los Angeles and State of California, ,haveinvented certain new anduseful Improvements in Break-Out Tongs, of
which ,the following is arspecification.
This invention relates to new anduseful improvements in breakout tongsfor rotary well drilling.
Tzhe objeotqof'the invention is toprovide a pair of tongs arranged to be mounted on the posts of a rotary. drilling rig,- so. as to be quickly swung into position to grip the coupling or" as quickly swung out of the way.
A further object is to provide a tong or wrench of simple construction arranged to grip different diameters and acting to take a quick and firm hold on the work.
A; construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described together with other features of the invention.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a pair of tongs constructed in accordance with my invention,
' Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same Fig. 3 is a view showing a portion of the tongs in transverse section,
Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 44; of Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 6 is a plan View showing the members of the tongs swung away from the work.
In the drawings the numeral 10 designates a supporting arm and 11 a like arm. Each arm has an eye 12 at its outer end for fitting on the shouldered post A of the rotary. To the inner end of each arm is pivoted a jaw composed of arcuate members 13 and 1 1 respectively.
The member 13, in each instance, has one end pivoted to its correlated arm upon a pin 15 and the said member is preferably bifurcated so as to receive said arm. The opposite end of each member 13 is also bifurcated to receive the reduced end of the member 14;, which is; pivoted. thereto. by a pin 16, forming aknuckle joint.
The. jaws have arcuate inner faces and are provided. with dies 17 i or any, other gripping means for engaging the work. Eachjaw' member let has a, handle 18 projecting from its outer. surface, by which it may be swung, The router. end of each inem-r ber 14.- is; formed Wlthlfllll extended lug: 19 provided with stepped latch faces: 20. and 21respectively. I
Adjacentxthe pins l5 bifurcated links-22 are pivoted on pins 23. The linksstraddle the arms 10 and 11, respectively and are oppositely directed.= Each linkhas a handle 24- at. its outer: end and is adapted? to. be swung over the lug 19 of the other tong member. The pivot pin 23 of each link is offset laterally on the arm with relation to the pin 15. Each link is engaged with the face 20 for the smaller size and with the face 21 for the large size of coupling or joint.
It will be seen that the link 22 of'one tong member is engaged with the outer end of the jaw of the other tong member and there is a space left between the outer end or lug 19 of each jaw and the arm of the other member. Thus when the table carrying the posts A is rotated the dies 17 engaging with the work will cause the arms 10 and 11 to swing and by means of the links pull the jaws into gripping relation with the work.
I11 using the tongs the arms 10 and 11 carrying the two members of the tongs are swung from the position shown in Fig. 6 to the position shown in Fig. 1. The jaw members 13 and 1 1 are then swung into position aroimd the work and fastened by the links 22. The table is rotated and the posts A swinging the arms 10 and 11 cause the dies 17 to bite into the work and the jaws to grip the work, owing to the offset relation of the pins 15 and 23. When it is desired to remove the tongs the links 22 are swung from the lugs 19. The operator by grasping the handles 18 may swing the jaws back upon the arms 10 and 11 and then swing said arms back to the position shown in Fig. 6'.
Various changes in the size and shape of the different parts, as well as modifications and alterations may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
hat I claim, is:
1. In a break-out tong, arcuate jaws each having an extension directed outwardly, radial arms pivoted to the opposite ends of the jaws, and links pivoted on the arms adjacent the pivots of said arms and detachably engaging the extensions of the jaws, said jaws being supported by the arms andarranged to swing back against said arms.
2. In a break-out tong, areuate jaws each having an extension directed outwardly, radial arms pivoted to the opposite ends of the jaws, links pivoted on the arms adjacent the pivots of said arms and detachably engaging the extensions of the jaws, said jaws being supported by the arms and arranged to swing back against the arms, and handles on the jaws for swinging the same.
3. In a break-out tong, arcuate jaws each comprising two members hinged together and one member having an outwardly directed extension thereon, arms pivoted to the outer ends of the other members of the jaws, and links hinged to the arms in juxtaposition to the pivots of the latter and detachably engaging the extensions of the jaws, the
jaws being arranged to swing relatively of the arms and being quickly disconnected therefrom.
In a break-out tong, a pair of jaws composed of arcuate members, one member of each jaw having its outer end bifurcated and the other member having a lug on its outer end, elongated arms each having its inner end pivoted in the bifurcated end of one of the jaw members and provided with an eye at its outer end, and links pivoted on the arms adjaeent the jaws and detachably en gaging the lugs of the jaws.
5. in a break-out tong.,a pair of jaws composed of arcuate members, one member of each jaw having its outer end bifurcated and the other member having a lug on its outer end, elongated arms each having its inner end pivoted in the bifurcated end of one of the jaw members and provided with an eye at its outer end, and links pivoted on the arms adjacent the jaws and detachably engaging the lugs of the jaws, the lugs of the jaws having stepped latch faces engaged by the links.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
