Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM A. LORENZ,
a citizen of the United States, residing in Hartford, in the county of Hartford and ed for thin and weak paper, but also aims to crinkle eflectively heavy and stiff grades of paper, as well as paper which it is desirable to have nearly dry at the crinkling operation.
It has been the practice to wet the paper" thoroughly and run it around a crinkllng cylinder or carrier, against which the paper has been pressed by a roll, to squeeze out the surplus water, and cause the paper tostick to the surface of the crinkling cylinder sufficientlyvto enable the cylinder to crush the paper edgewise against the doctor-blade,

In order to crinkle heavy or stifi" grades of paper, as well as paper which it is desired to wet only moderately, the present invention provides means for carrying the paper against the doctor-blade without being so dependent upon the adhesion of-the paper to the surface of the cylinder. A belt is provided to run around the main cylinder, between t e introductory side thereof and the doctor bladc. This belt is endless and holds the paper to the cylinder, so that "the friction between the paper and 7 cylinder, aided by the friction between the paper and the belt, is suflicient to advance the paper with the required force against the doctorblade, even though the'paper be heavy and" stifi' or not saturated with water. 'At a point in proximity to-the doctor-blade, the belt runs over a fixed support, and then runs back over ,ide-pulleys to the introductory side of til: belt support may be adjusted as close as desired to the doctor-blade, so as to control the character of the crinkling. Fine results may be gained by forming this belt support of independently adjustable sections crinkling cylinder. The

The paper web 10 is in the form of a roll 11 mounted upon a spool 12, the rotation of said roll being retarded by a weighted friction belt 13. The web runsover a guideroll 14 onto the main crinkling cylinder 15; steam or water being supplied to the web upon one or both sides by means of perforated pipes16, 17. A belt 18 may also run over said guide-roll 14, the paper web 10 entering between the belt and the main 0 linder 15, and running around the latter with the belt, whereby it is carried against the doctor-blade 19 and crinkled and stripped from the cylinder, as at 20,, the product being carried away by delivery belt mechanism 21. The main belt,.which may be wider than the paper Web, returns over guide- rolls 22, 23, 24, to the introductory roll 14; and the main belt may be kept taut by the roll 23, which maybe mounted u ona pair of arms 25, adjustable around a g and fastened in place by bolts 27. By reason of its taut condition. the belt causes sufficient grip between itself and the paper, and also between the paper and cylinder 15,

v To'support the belt at the'doctor-blade 19, there may be provided a fixture in the form of a rounded guide 36, which may be placed inder 15 for a short distance, and there secured by rivets 38 to a bar 39, which is fixed by bolts 40 upon the ends of a pair of swing arms 41, the latter having hubs 41 split at 41 and secured, by bolts 42 upon a pair of hollow studs 43, through which the cylinder shaft 31 extends;said hollow studs 43 being fixed to the side ,frames 44 of the machine. By loosening the bolts 42, the arms 41 may be'adjusted'around the cylin- I der 15 to bring the belt support 36 closer to or away from the blade 19, in which position it may be fastened by' tightening the bolts 42. If desired, the plate 37 may also be extended downwardly at 45 to form a sheath for the belt; and it may have a flaring flange 46.
To secure fine adjustment of difierent widthwise portions of the belt as it turns up past the doctor-blade, the, belt sup ort 36 may comprise sections or leaves 4 which may be integral with plate 37 and may have the form of teeth extending from said plate. Each tooth may be independently adjusted, the teeth for this purpose having individual screws 48 so that the position of the belt and the character of the crinkling may be adjustably controlled throughout the width of the paper web. It is also noted that the arms 41 may be adjusted ,to carry the entire structure towards or from the doctor-blade, without interfering with the individual adjustment of the screws 48; and that the latter may be adjusted to secure individual variations in the sections-47, or to bring all of said sections to" new positions; these sections being preferably formed of springy metal to facilitate the adjustments. The arms 25 may be re-adjusted to secure the desired tautness Variations may be resorted to within the scope ofthe invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.

The combination with a crinkling cyl inder or carrier and a doctor-blade or crinkling element, of an endless belt to run partly around the cylinder and to confine the paper against the cylinder and carry it to the crinkling element, means to guide the paper or web into the bightof the cylinder and belt, and a support at the doctor-blade to guide the belt away from the cylinder, said belt support formed of independently movable sections. The combination with a crinkling cylinder or carrier and a doctor-blade or crinkling element, of an endless belt to run partly around the cylinder and to confine the paper against the cylinder and carry it to the crinkling element, means to guide the paper or web into the bight of the c lindcr an belt, a support at the doctor-b ade to guide the belt away from the cylinder, said beltsupport formed of independently movable sections, and means for efi'ecting adjustment of the different sections independently of one another.
6. The combination with a crinklingcylinder or carrier and a doctor-blade, of an endless belt to run partly around the cylinder, and a rounded fixed support or guide over which the belt runs in leaving the c linder, said guide in proximity to the cylin er and to the doctor-blade.
7. The combination with a crinkling cylinder or carrier and a doctor-blade, of an endless belt to run artly around the cylinder, a rounded fixe support or guide over proximity to said crinkling element over weaves which the belt runs inleaving the cylinder,
said guide in proximity to the cylinder and to the doctor-blade, and a power-driven roll over which the belt runs in its return to the introductory side of the cylinder.
8. The combination with a ,crmkling cylinder or carrier and a doctor-blade, of an inder, said guide in proximity to the cylinder and to the doctor-blade, said doctor blade having a beveled edge inserted between the crinkling cylinder and the rounded guide or support.

The combination with a crinkling cylinder or carrier and a doctor-blade, of an endless belt to run partly around the cylinder, and a rounded fixed support or guide over which the belt runsin leaving the cylinder, said guide in proximityto the cylinder and to the doctor-blade, said support adjustable circumierentially of the crinkling cylinder. i l 1 11. In a crinkling machine, the combine tion of a crinkling cylinder or carrier, a continuously moving belt running therearound, a doctor-blade, means for leading the paper betweenv the cylinder and belt, to be carried thereby against the doctor-blade, and a plate having a curved or rounded portion over which the belt emerges in proximity to the doctor-blade.
16. In a crinkling machine, the combination oi' a crinkling cylinder or carrier, a, continuously moving belt running therearound, a doctor-blade, means for leading the paper between the cylinder and belt, to be carried thereby against the doctor-blade, and a plate having a curved or rounded portion over which the belt emerges in proximity to the doctor-blade, said plate com: prising sections individually adjustable.
17. The combination with a crinkling cylinder or carrier and a doctor-blade or crinkling element, of an endless belt to run partly aroundthe cylinder and to confine the paper agalnst the cylinder andcarry it to the crinkling element, a fixed support in proximity to said crinkling element over which said belt runs, and means to guide the belt back to the introductory side oi the cylinder, means being provided for effecting adjustments of said support to and from the cylinder and to and from the doctor-blade.
18. The combination with a crinkling cyl inder or carrier and a doctor-blade or crinklingelenrent, of an endless belt to run partly around the cylinder and to confine the paper against the cylinder and carry it to the ling element, of an endless belt to run partly aroundthe cylinder and to confine the paper against the cylinder and carry it to the .crinkling element means to guide the belt at the bight of the cylinder and belt, a fixed support at the doctor-blade to guide the belt awa from the cylinder, and means to guide the elt back to the introductory side of the cylinder. 1

The combination with a crinkling cylinder or carrier and a doctor-blade or crinkling element, of an endless belt to run partly around the cylinderand to confine the paper against the cylinder and carry it t6 the crinkling element, means to guide the belt at the bight of the. cylinder andbelt, a fixed support at the doctor-blade to guide the belt away from the cylinder, said belt support formed of independently movable sections, andm'eans for effecting adjustment ofthe different sections independently ofone another.
22. The combinationwith a crinkling cylinder or carrier and adoctor-blade or crinkling element, of an endless belt to run partly around the cylinder and to confine the paper against the cylinder and carry it to the crinkling element, a fixed support in prox imity to said crinkling element over which said belt runs, a roll to which the belt runs from said support, and means gearing said roll to said cylmder.
23. The combination Witha crinkling cylinder or carrier and a doctor-blade or crinkling element, of an endlessbelt to run partly around the cylinder andto confine the paper against the cylinder and carry it to the crinkling element, a. fixed support in prox imity to said crinkling element over which said beltruns, a roll to which the belt runs from said support, means gearing said roll to said cylinder, and means for guidin the belt back to the introductory side 0 they cylinder.
