hot water bottles, and more particularly to those which can be used also as parts of fountain syringes.
The object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple yet efficient device of the purpose set forth, having a novel form of air inlet valve which is confined totally within a recess with which the outer end of the filling plugv is provided. lVhen the device is used as a hot water bottle, the valve is tightly closed and being then confined within the recess of the iilling plug, it will not project to become entangled with bed clothes or the like and Yfurthermore will not be subjected to damage or accidental release.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in thel novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing. f
Figure l is a front elevation, parts being broken away and in section.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section through the filling plug and the air inlet valve.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a plug which may be used to close the discharge end of the bottle when it is to be used solely as a hot water bottle and not as a fountain syringe.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a wrench which is preferably used for removing and applying the several plugs.
In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a metallic water bottle which is preferably formed ofaluniinum, one end of said bottle having a filling opening closed by a threaded plug 3 which is formed with a large recess 4 opening through its outer end. This plug is provided with a bail 5 by means of which the bottle may be suspended and, when not in use, this bail may be swung substantially into the recess 4.
The end of the bottle y1 opposite the plug 3, is formed with a neck 6 int-o which either of a pair of plugs 7 and 8 may be threaded, the plug 7 being of such a form as to entirely close the neck 6, while plug 8 is formed with an outlet nipple 9 forv connecting a syringe hose thereto. Suitable gaskets 10 are provided for thethree plugs 3, 7 and 8, and in order that these plugs may be tightly threaded in place to compress the gaskets and not permitleakage, I prefer to provide My invention' relates to improvements ini a wrench such as that shown in 5. -This wrench includes a straight shank 11 which may be received in a kerf 12 in the outer end of the plug 7 for turning the latter, said shank being provided with a pair of projecting pins 13 for reception in sockets 14 in the plug 3, and being provided with a hooked end 15 to engage a flat sided head 16 at the outer end of the plug 8.
In order to facilitate proper flow of water or other liquid from the bottle 1 through the nipple 9, when the bottle is suspended by means of the bail 5, I provide' a novel form of air inlet valveJ which is confined totally within the recess 4. In the construction shown, the bottom of the recess 4 is formed with a central opening in which is threaded a tube 17 carrying an air inlet tube 18. A cylindrical hollow valve body 19 is threaded on the tube 17 against a gasket 20 which bears upon the bottom of the recess 4, the outer end of this'body being provided with air inlet perforations 21 and with a central valve-forming boss 22 which is preferably of the conical form shown. A cap 23 is threaded on the outer'end of the body 19 and is provided with a central opening 24 which is closed by the boss 22 when the cap 2l is threaded inwardly. Thus, the passage of air or liquid through the pipe 18 is prevented and when the plug 7 is in place, the device may readily be used as a hot water bottle, without any danger whatever' of leakage. When the bottle is to be employed as part of a fountain syringe, the plug 8 is substituted for the plug 7 and after filling the bottle by removing the plug', it is suspended by means of the bail 5. Thus, when the cap 23 is unthreaded to some extent to expose the openings 24 and 21, air may enter the bottle and consequently the free running of liquid therefrom is permitted.
By employing the construction shown or a substantial equivalent thereof, al very citicient article is provided, particular attention being directed to the housingfof the air inftorn of saidl recessg'mwhollow'f-valve body let valve within the recess 4 of the '-filling" threaded 'Oni'saidrtub 'andirined within plug 3. By this arrangement, Whenfthe de` vice is usedas e hot WetterA bottle, thelvalve does not project toibecome entangled with bed clothes, apparel or Vthe 'lilregmndf ture= thermore, even When the bottle is roughly handled, there is I'nofdanger Tofinjuring? the?! air inlet valve or of accidentally opening the y sertie-When 4not EFdesi'red.
