Original application filed Uctober 8, k1923, Serial No.. 667,185.' 'Divided and this application led Oct-ober 20, 1924. Serial No. 744,607.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARKE LAKE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Q] for Lockers, of which the following is a complete specification. This invention relates to coin controlled locking means for lockers, and is made-espe- Y cially for collapsible `great doors or other vertically sliding doors Such as shown `in my application filed October 8, 1923, Serial Number 667,185, of which this application is a division.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a coin controlled lock `for lockers, wherein a` coin, disk o-r check of any desirable shape, size and diameter may be used, and wherein the varying of the diameter of said coin or disk may be utilized to an advantage in assigning a different locker to an individual.
A still further object of rthis invention isV the provision of a coin controlled and` actuated release for lockers or locker latches which may be placed within and near the top of the locker shown and described in the above mentioned application previously filed, and which may have a passage for the releasing coin communicating with a locked container under the floor of the locker.
An even further object of the invention is to provide a desirable lock which is mada of but'few parts, is cheap to make and install, and is not likely to get out of order.
With these general obj ects in view, as well as minor objects which will appear in the course of the detailed description, the invention will now be described by reference to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views. and wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary horizontal central section ofthe lock member showing a coin in place ready for operation. A
Fig. 2v is a cross section of the lock structure taken along line 11-11 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical. section of the coin guide taken on line III-III of Fig.' 1; and,
Fig. L1 is a perspective view of the yoke construction and coin engagingfoot showing the latch `attached thereto.
This coin controlled lock is preferably installed in lockers having means for con- 'integral passage 5 which may be veying the coin to a container, such as the built in adacent the side 6 of the locker. The same is also installed near the top 7 of the locker where it will be best suited to hold avertically sliding do'or having a latch lug 8 in. position after the door hasbeen closed..
Inithe illustration, the latch and its several parts are shown in alocked position with. acoin 9'positioned in coin guide 10 which has an opening 11 formed' therein, and which maybe varied in size in the different lockers to suit the particular coin used.
' Aysuitable plunger 12 having a transverse plungerpin 13 is slidably mounted in housing 14 with a retrieving spring 15. A slot 16 provides vfree passage for the pin 13.
lVhen plunger 12 is forced inwardly against spring 15, coin 9 iswcarried to engaging foot 17 and forces it, with yoke 18, back to a point where latch 19 is carried inwardly against spring 2O to a point where latch lug 8 is released. Upon releasing plunger 12, coin 9 drops down through passage 5 to a suitable container not'here shown. Any retrievingmeans may be used in place of the helical spring without departing from the invention.
The operation of the device is obvious from the foregoing description.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is: v
1. A coin controlled lock for lockers, comprisingy a coin and plunger actuated releasing means for the lock including a yoke, coin engaging foot, a slotted coin guide, a slotted plunger housing means of retrieving said plunger carried by said housing and a manually operated plunger having a pin in tegral therewith and extending at right an-V gles therefrom, said pin terminating in said coin guide to bear against the periphery of a coin whereby the saine is forced against said coin engaging foot and rectilinear motion is imparted to said yoke.
2. A coin controlled lock for lockers, comprising a coinand plunger actuated releasing means lfor the lock including a slotted coin guide, a slotted plunger housing adjacent thereto, a plunger pin carried by a manually operatedv plunger disposed to project through the slots of said coin guide and plunger housing,`a yoke having a coin en-v gaging foot attached at one endand 'adapted to engage said locking means adjacent the other end, `said :plunger pin extending at right angles to the direction of travel of said manually operated plunger and adapted to 5 bear against the periphery of a coin, Wherel0 said locker including a slotted coin guide, a
,slotted plunger housing' vadjacent thereto, a retrieving spring Within said .plunger housing, a plunger `pin .carried Yby said plunger and disposed to .pass through .the slots ot l5 looth the plunger housing and ,coin guide, a
,coin .engaging foot, a yoke connecting said coin engaging foot and the locking means, retrieving means for said yoke and means for conveying the coin away from said releasing means, said coin guide having a `)portion .thereof projecting beyond the locker be inserted dipoint behind said plunggaging foot carried by the other end thereof, looth .of said yoke ends extending forwardly and disposed in the same horizontal plane, a retrieving means engaging the locking means, a. longitudinally slotted .coin guide terminating adjacent said coin engaging foot, a slidahly mounted plunger disposed betewen the ends of the yoke7 a pin integal with said plunger and `means lor maintaining said plunger in a set position substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof ll hereunto aliix my signature this 3rd da)7 ot October, 1924.
CLARKE R. LAKE.
