UNITEDv STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. ENGEL AND WALTER S. ENGEL, KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
' BOOK CONSTRUCTION.
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that we, CHARLES L.V ENGEL and VALTER S. ENGEL, citizens of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain'new and useful Improvement in Book Constructions, of which the following is a specication.
` Our invention relates to improvements in book constructions. i'
It relates particularly to the construction of books adaptedtfor use as books of record, which are heavy and are subjected to rough usage.
One ofthe objects of our invention is to provide a novel means for hinging the covers to the back of the book, which is simple, cheap tomake, strong and durable, not liable to get out of order, and which presents a neat appearance.
. A further object-of our invention, is the provision of novel means for attaching the covers to the back, Vwhich eliminates such accessory means for fastening the part together as rivets, stitching, etc.
A further object of our invention, is the provision of novel means; for binding the edges of the covers.
Still another object of our invention, is to provide a novel binding strip', which may be quickly and easily fitted on the edge of a cover, and which hasnovel means by which it may be securely fastened thereto, without such accessory fastening devices as rivets.
The'novel features of our invention are, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the preferred embodiment of ou'r invent-ion,
Fig. 1, is a plan view, partly broken away, of a` book back and covers provided with our improvement.
Fig. 2, is an enlarged section on the line 2*-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the outer back member.
Fig. 4, is an enlarged section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Fio. 5 is an enlarged section on the line b v 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6, is a perspective view of one of the corner binding caps.
Similar reference characters similar parts in the different views.
The back of the book comprises an inner channel sheet metal back member 1, and an designate outer channel back member 2, which is fitted to the outer side of the member 1, to which it may be secured in any suitable manner, as by screws 3,`having heads at their inner end and fitted in threaded holes in the member2. The latter may be of any suitable material, such as aluminum or vulcanized fibre. Y Gpposite longitudinal edges ofthe member 1, are provided with barrels 4, in which are mounted respectively two pintles 5.
designates two metal hinge plates at opposite sides respectivelyk of the back, each plate 6 having at its inner edge barrels 7, through which extends the adjacent pintle 5.
The back member 2, has at eavch end an inwardly extending arcuate flange 8, which is arranged to cover the adjacent ends of the pintles 5, to prevent their removal, accidentally or otherwise. y
9 designates two outery cover members, each of which may be composed of heavy cardboard or other material, and upon the inner' side of which is fastened. the adjacent hinge member 6.
Respectively mounted upon the inner sides of theouter cover members 9 are two inner cover members 10, which may be rheavy cardboard and which respectively overlap the hinge plates 6. Each of the latter is provided with a longitudinal row of perforations 11, which constitute'openings, through which the adjacent cover member 10, is pressed, such pressed portion being glued to the -inner side of the adjacent outer cover member 9, (see the left cover in Fig. y2), thereby securely attaching the cover members 9 and 10'to the hinge plates 6, without the use of rivets, stitching, or other accessory fastening means.
Each cover has each end edge and its outer longitudinal .edge bound with a channel binding strip of metal, preferably, such binding strip or member being designated by 12, Figs. 4 and 5. Each member 12 has an inwardly extending oblique portion 13 which fits against the bevelled outer edge of the cover member 9. The latter has on its inner side adjacent t0 and parallel with each end edge and outer longitudinal edge a raised portion 14, Figs. 4 and 5 upon which each adjacent strip or member 12 rests. Each of the latter has at its inner upper edge a longitudinal portion 15 forming a shoulder which engages the inner edge of the adjacent raised portion 14. Such longitudinal portionhas inwardly extend-v [caps may be secured as by soldering.
The raised portions 1 4 of each cover member 9v form in said member a depression in Which the adjacent member 10 is -mounted, the inner side of the latter being flush Vwith the inner sides ofthe binding members 12.
`fe do not limiteur invention to the structure shown and described, as many modifications, Within the scope of the appended claims, may be made Without departing from the spirit of our invention.
1. In book construction, an outer vcover member, having on its inner side a' raised portion adjacent to and parallel with one edge thereof an edge binding member embracing -the outer side and said edge and extending inwardly over the said. raised pori tion `and, embracingtlie inner edge of vthe latter and having a V,flange extending inwardly. from, said raised portion, and an inner Cover member fastened to the inner side Of Said outer cover member, and overlapping Seid ,Hanse y -1 f y 2.. In-bookiconstruotion, a back, an inner cover member, an outer cover member fastened tothe outerl side of said innei' member and having ad]acent to one of its edges land parallel therewith a raised portion, an edge binding member embracing the outer sideA fla-nge, and a hinge member disposed be-Y tween said cover members and hinged lto the back and having a transverse opening, .said cover membersv being glued vto each other through said opening. s 3. In book construction, -an edge binding member having a channel adaptedrto receive an edge portion-of a cover member and having at its inner edge portion a-depressed portion formingy a shoulder adapted to engage the inner edge of a raised portion on the inner side of the cover rmember and having an inivardly extending flangeat the inner side 'of said shoulder adapted when the cover member is' in said channel to lie against the innerside thereof.- 4. In' book construction, acover member having on its inner side a raised portion adjacent to and parallel With its end edges and outer longitudinal edge, clianneledge binding members embracing the outerside of said cover member and theinner side and inner edge of saidraised portion, eachhaving extending invvardly -from saidraisedV portionv a flange, an inner cover member fastened to theV inner side of the first named cover member and overlapping said flanges, and tivo corner caps'embracing` and secured to one of said binding 'members and respectively embracing and seeured'toV the adjacent endsfof the other tivo edge Vbinding members. l j ,Y Y 7 Y l In testimony Whereoil We have Ysigned our names to this specification.
