Description

06L 4, 1932. Q HALWEY 1,881,078
I HINGE Filed Aug. 20. 1930 /0 m i H 7 Invenlor flamwlih I A llorney Patented Oct. 4, 1932 Parser FFEQ CHARLES HALWEY, OF SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA amen Application filed August 20, 1930. Serial No, 4765545.
This invention relates generally to improvements in hinges and specifically to an improvement in a hinge whereby means is provided for limiting the opening of the hinge to a predetermined angle and stopping the opening of the hinge as it reaches said predetermined angle.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a hinge of the type described,
which is provided with covered means for limiting the opening of the hinge which is equipped with positive stops for such action.
It is also an object of the inventlon to provide a hinge of the type described, which therein stop means to limit the angle of opening of said hinge, said stop means const tuting a covering guard when the hinge 1s in closed position to prevent the removal of the screws or the like adjacent the ointed part of the hinge which secures the hinge to its supports.
It is also an important object of this invention to provide a hinge of thetype described, which has inseparably associated and incorporated means for limiting the angle of opening of said hinge, which 1s of ornamental and attractive formation, and which covers and guards against the removal of the hinge attaching means adjacent the ointed portion ofthe hinge.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of the character described, which is simple and satisfactory in operation, durable and simple in construction, which 1S composed of few parts, and which may be manufactured as a whole at a relatively small expense for material and mechanical opera tion. V
1 These and other and further objects as well as the nature of the invention, and its composition and arrangement and combination of parts will be clearly understood by anyone acquainted with the art to which this invention relates from a reading of the following description of the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a general top plan view of my improved hinge disclosing the disposition of the elements thereof.
has associated therewith and incorporated Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through Figure 1..
. Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on a line through one of the apertures of the hinge members.
Figure a is an edge view in elevation showing the position of the means for limiting the opening of the hinge.
It is to be understood that I do not desire to limit the application of this invention to the particular modification set out herein to exemplify the principle thereof, and any change or changesmay be made in material and structure consistent with the spirit and scope of the invention.
Referring in detail to the drawing, it will be seen thatone embodiment of my invention comprises a hinge 5 composed, of a pair of plates 6 having angularly disposed flanges 7 to space them from the surfaces to which they are to be attached.
Each of the plates 6 is provided with. a longitudinally elongated aperture of rectangular form as indicated at 8. lhe plates 6' are provided with screw, bolt, or rivet holes 9 adjacent the jointed portion 10 of the hinges and also adjacent the outer end portions of the plates, for receiving the attaching means for the hinge. An ornamentally formed flat plate 11- of a proper width to cover the holes 9 adjacent the hinged portion 10 is disposed longitudinally and centrally across the said hinged portion 10.
Depending from the guard plate 11 into the slots 8 are tabs 12 formed on the ends of the plate 11. The tabs 12 are of such a width that they are permitted a close but free sliding movement longitudinally in the slots 8. Formed in extension of the lower end portion 13 of the tabs are laterally projecting keepers 14 which are adapted to slidably engage the under surface of the plate of the hinge portion 6 to retain the said tabs 12 in the slots to prevent the separation of the plate 11 from the hinge plates 6.
hen the hinge is in open position, as shown in Figure 1, the tabs 12 abut the ends 15 of the apertures 8 and thereby act as stops to limit further opening of the hinge. It is obvious that in the closed position of the the ornamental-guard plate ll conopletely 7 covers the holes for the hinge securing means at the inner end 'of the plates 6, and as the formation of the tabs and the keepers therew on is such as to maintain said ornamental determined angle, and which also efiectually 1 prevents the removal of'the fastening means I of the hinge adjacent the jointed portion nal formed on, the remaining fourth plate 11 in close parallel disposition with the upper surfaces of the plates 6, the removal of the said hinge securing means will be A effectually prevented, while the hinge is in the. closed position.
It will now be obvious that I have provided a guarded hinge of the type described, which is composed of few andsimple parts which 5 can be readily and cheaply manufactured, which effectually incorporates means to limit the opening function of said hinge, to a prethereof when saidhinge is in closed position. It is also obvious that my improved hinge accomplishes the objects stated in an admirable manner, and it is othewise very satisfactorily suited for the purposes vforwhich it is designed; r 7
- I claim: I
v A stop hinge of wthetype described, com- I I I prising a pair of-flat hinge plates, a flange formed on three edges of each plate, a j Oureach plate, the journals extending on the Sameside of the plates as the flange, a pin throughthe journals hinging the plates together, 1a fiat stop plate having at each end an angularly directed tab with lateral projections, a"rectangular opening'in each of said plates adapted to slidably' receive said I tabs from the side of the plates opposite the journals in such manner that the pro ections thereon prevent their coming out of the openings, the length of the tabs andthe positioning of the projections thereon being so regulated that'in the fully closed position of the hinge in which the hinge plates are in longitudinal alined with each other, the stop plate will bridge the joint between the, hinge plates and'be' engaged substantially throughout its length 'with the adjacent surfaces of the hinge plates.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature,
' CHARLES HALWEY. o
