Description

J. J. CURTIS QUOI N FiledMarch 28. 1924 .5 u u 6 illllilllmllml WITNESSES INVENTOR Jmwzs J. CUR r/s ATTORNEYS I 'BY Patented June 9, 1925.
JAMES J. CURTISQQF NEW YORK, N. Y.
QUOIN.
Application filed March 28, 1924. Serial No. 702,694.
To all to 710m it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jules J. Gnarls, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan in the county and State of New York; have invented a new and Improved Qnoin, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to quoins and has for an object to provide an improved eonstruction wherein readily adjustable locking means are provided at the end of each quoin.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a quoin wherein a positive engagement is provided between two adjacent quoins for holding the same in any adjusted position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved construction for locking quoins against an accidental sliding movement while permitting ready separa tion by lateral movement.
In the accompanying drawing-- Figure 1 is a side view of a pair of quoins arranged in operative position.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through Figure 1, approximately on line 2--2, the same being on an enlarged scale.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through Fig ure 1, approximately on line 33.
Figure l is a top plan view of one end of one of the quoins shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 and 2 indicate co-acting quoins of identical construction, each quoin being provided with the usual toothed structure 3 for receiving a wrench oractuating tool and with a tongue 4. In the present invention, the tongue): is formed withteeth 5, said teeth being in the nature of a toothed rack for co-acting with the gear wheel 6 on the other quoin. Each of the gear wheels- 6 is rotatably supported by a suitable shaft 7 and is held locked in position by one or more set screws 8. It will be noted that each of the quoins 1 and 2 is provided with a slot or opening 9 at the large end whereby the respective gear wheels 6 are readily accommodated and held so as to project a suflicient distance from the slot to engage the teeth 5 of the tongue 4 of the adjacent quoin.
It will be noted that when the two quoins are in operative position, the gear wheels 6 of the respective quoins will engage the teeth of the opposite quoin. hen the set screws 8 are loose, the respective quoins may be slid back and forth as desired and after having been moved to the desired position, the various set screws 8 will be tightened for locking the gears 6 against rotation. This will positively prevent any sliding action of the respective quoins in respect to each other but will not prevent one quoin from being bodily moved away from the other.
l/Vhen it is desired to lock the gear Wheel 6, the set screws 8 on one side only are tightened though, of course, the opposite side could be tightened if desired by removing the quoin, tightening the same and then replacing the quoin. Ordinarily this would not be desirable as the quoins are shifted to the desired position when in the printers frame and, consequently, it is undesirable to remove the quoins.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of co-acting identically constructed quoins, each quoin having :1 toothed tongue and a groove adjacent one end of the tongue the groove in one quoin being adapted to receive the tongue of the opposite quoin, a gear wheel rotatably mounted in each quoin and adapted to continually engage the teeth on the tongues, and means co-acting with each gear wheel for locking independently the respective gear wheels against rotation whereby the PATENT OFFICE.
quoins are prevented independent movement in respect to each other while in contact.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of co-acting quoins, each quoin being provided with a groove and a tongue having teeth thereon for producing a rack efliect, the tongue of one quoin fitting into the groove of the other quoin, each of said quoins having a slot at the large end, a gear wheel rotatably mounted in said slot projecting into the groove of that particular quoin and continually engaging the teeth of the tongue of the opposite quoin, and manually actuated means for locking each of said gear wheels independently against rotation.
3. A quoin, comprising a body formed with a tongue and a head, said head being slotted so as to present in effect a groove opposite the end of the tongue, said tongue having gear teeth on its outer face, a gear wheel arranged in said head projecting into said groove so as to engage the teeth on the tongue of the co-acting quoin, and a tially opposite the teeth on said tongue so as to engage the teeth on the tongue oi l a co-acting quoin, and a set screw carried in each side of said head and adapted to be pressed against said gear Wheel for locking the same against rotation.
