. aaivri s; a, warts, on NEW YORK, iv. Y.
Y Q." 1 3 event nama a March 28, 1924'. Serial no- 702,695.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JAMES JfCrnrrrs, a citizeiiofthe United States,"and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, iirthe county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Quoin, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7 g This invention relates to quoins and has for an object to provide an improved quoin wherein means are provided at each end of a pair of quoins which may be moved for locking the quoins in any adjusted position.
Another object in view is to provide a quoin provided with .means for gripping the bead of the co-acting quoin for locking the respective quoins against accidental shifting. V
A further object is to provide an improved construction over the construction shown in my application, Serial No. 637,546.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1is a side view of a pair of quoins disclosing an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of one of the .quoins shown in Figure 1, part being broken away at one end.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through Figure 1, approximately on line 33.'
Figure is a View similar to Figure 3 but showing a slightly modified construction.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing a further modified form of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 and 2 indicate the two coacting quoins, which quoins are provided with the usual teeth 3 and 4 for receiving a. turning instrument. Also each quoin is provided with an inclined bead 5 and with upstanding walls 6 and 7 In one of these walls, as for instance, wall 6, is provided a threaded aperture 8 designed to receive a set screw 9. Preferably this set screw is of less length than the aperture 8 so that when it is tightened as shown in Figure 3, the end will be countersunk.
When the quoin is not in use, the screw 9 is usually loose so that the quoin may slide on its co-acting quoin or be readily removed therefrom. However, after the quoins have been assembled as shown in Figurel and a wrenehunsed for shifting the quoins to a desired position, the screw 9 in each of the quoins is tightened whereby the respective quoins are locked against accidental sliifting.
Ifdesired, one screw may betightened and the other left loose, though ordinarily both screwswould be tightened in order to insure against "any accidental displacement. In order to assist the action of the screws, the respective beads 5 are each provided with a roughened or corrugated surface 10 on each side. i
In Figure 1, a slightly modified constructionis shown wherein an auxiliary screw 9 is provided and arranged preferably diametrically opposite screw 9 though it could be ofiset if desired. By reason of the use of two screws, either side of the quoin could be left uppermost and preferably actuated to lock the quoins together.
In Figure 5, a further modified form of the invention is shown wherein the quoins 1' and 2' are formed identical and each is formed at its large end with a notch or cut out portion 11 which is almost filled by a clamping member 12, which clamping member is a substantially U-shaped structure and provided with a stem 13 extending through a suitable bore 1 1 so that the end 15 may be riveted or offset. The body or U-shaped part of the clamping member 12 is provided with a comparatively narow slit or opening 16 and a wider opening 17 for receiving the tongue 5 of the adjacent quoin. By this construction and arrangement, whenever the screw 9 and 9 are tightened, the arms of the clamping member 12 will be pressed against the sides of the tongue 5 and thereby lock the two quoins together. A locking action will be, of course, provided if one of the screws is tightened, though ordinarily, it is preferable to tighten both screws.
What I claim is: V
1. In a device of the character described, a pair of quoins, each quoin being provided with a groove and a tongue, the tongue of one quoin fitting into the groove of the opposite quoin, a substantially U-shaped clamping member carried by one of the quoins, said U-shaped clamping member being fitted'into said grooves, and means for causing said clamping member to grip the tongue of the other quoin.
2. Ina device of the character described, a pair of quoins, each quoin being provided with a groove and a tongue, the tongue of one quoin fitting into the groove of the opposite quoin, a substantially U-s-haped clamping member arranged in each of sald grooves, and means acting at right angles to the tongues of the quoins for causing the respective clamping members to grip said tongues.
3. In a device of the character described, a quoin provided With a tongue and a groove at one end, a substantially U-shaped clampi11 member arran ed in said roove said O t: b
clamping member having a retaining stem projecting through the body of the quoin, and a set screw arranged on each side of said clamping member, said set screws be- 15 ing positioned to force said clamping memacting quoin.
