Application inea october 29, 1924. seriai No. 746,585.
To ZZ whomz't may concern.' i
Be it knownV that l, Jol-IN oi-mon, a citizen of the United Sta,tes,"residing at the city of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and `State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Covers; and I do declare the followingV to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
This invention relates to book covers of the style shown and described in my U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,512,489, issued October 21, 1924.
But this improvement has nothing whatever to do with any particular style of hinging whereby the covers are connected with the back of the book, but relates solely to the flexible side covers that are so formed that portions thereof will extend beyond either end of the hinged portion of the metallic back plate, the particular object being to prevent books of this sort from tearing the pockets or scratchingr the desk.
Therefore in the following description no special mention will be made of any particu.- lar form of complementary hinge elements that are carried by the metal back and by the side covers, since the present invention applies to all books of this particular style, as identified by my Letters Patent above referred to, irrespective of the manner in which the hinge elements are formed and interconnected. Y
In the drawing Y Figure 1 is a view ofthe inside of the book cover with the side covers fully opened- 'Figure 2 is a similar view of the outside of the book cover with the sides fully opened- Figure 3 is a detail view of one form of the liexible covers the latter being fully opened, and y Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan view of a slightly modified form of my invention with the parts detached.
Similar numerals of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
1 is the metal back, having at its side edges complementary hinge elements 2, and 3 are the flexible side covers that are cut away so as `to form a recess or jog 4 at their inner portions, the length of this j og, which is the inner edge thereof, being equal to the length of that portion of the metal back 1 which carrieshinge elements.
This inner edge carries hinge elements 6 that are complementary to the elements 2 and are interconnected therewith so as to form hinge connections between the coversand the back plate 1. f
The formation of thejogs 4 leaves flaps 7 which are flexed toward each other andV are secured together by any suitable clips 8, as clearly shown in the drawings.
It will therefore be clear that I have provided flexible extensions of the cover that form a part of the back of the book so that there can be no danger of tearing pockets in which `the book might be placed or in marring a desk when the books are manipulated thereon.
In the invention as heretofore described, and as particularly identified by the con# struction shown at Figures 1 and 2, the side covers are made in two halves or sections,
because it would be very expensive to form v these covers integral from a single piece of leather with the central portion cut away as at 5, shown at Figure 3, owing to the fact that considerable leather would be necessari-- ly wasted, and comparatively small pieces of leather could not be used at all, whereas if the covers are made in sections they can all be cut out of smaller pieces of leather with no appreciable waste.
But the invention is the same whether the cover is made in sections'or in one piece, and therefore is not limited in this respect.
Referring particularly to Figure 4 it will be observed that the metal back plate 1 has extensions 9 at each end which make this plate substantially as long as the covers themselves, while the length of that portion of kthe plate that carries the hinge elements 2 is substantially the same as the length of the jog in the covers as hereinbefore described.
There is no particular object in extending the back plate in this` manner, yexcept to ico show that such extension is fully within the scope of the invention.
What is claimed is Y 1. A book @over comprising a back ,and side covers connected thereto by hinge ele.-
nients, said cjoyersvhaying extensionportions at theirupper and lower ends .which extend inwardly toward each other and substantially parallel With said back. l
2L A book eoyer comprising a nietal baek and side coverspconneoted"to said back Vby hinge ele1nents,the side covers having portions above and below said inetal back Whieh extend substantially parallel with said baek whereby flexible extensions are provided atv the back of the book. y A
` 3. book cover Comprising a metal back having alongits edges hinge elements, and flexible Side covers that are longerthan said back andare eut away at their inner por tions to forni recesses, fthe inner edges o said recesses being of .substantially the saine length: as that of said back andhavinghing'e elements seured thereto which Iare conneeted With the hinge elements of said back, said covers having portions that extend aorossthe back ofthe book in'n'nediately beyond both ends thereof.
.4. A book ycover comprising a metalbaol hai/'ing hinge elements. atits side edges, and eparate flexible side covers that are longer thansaid back `and have jog-s out intheir -to therbaek, lthe kends of the covers being` Aflexed around at the back of' the book iininediately beyondthe ends ofthe baekand secured together in: abutting relation.
:5. Abaek Cover comprising anietal back plate and cover portions hinged'to,saidlplate throughout Vthe rmiddleportion of their lengthithe ends of theeoverszhaving extensionsthat` forni a part'of the back of the book. f
In testimony whereof I amx my signature hereto. 'Y f JOI-IN SCHADE.
