Be it lrnown that I, Joa-IN A. LUNDEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county `oi? Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Sound Boxes, ol which the following is a specification.
rllhis inventionr relates to that type of sound boxes for phonographs and like sound producing instruments in which the needle or stylus mounting is connectedto the sound producing diaphragm by an angularly disposed bar and is pivotally mounted on the sound box casing, and the present improvement has for its main object .y
To provide a structural formation and association of parts in a stylus mounting whereby a simple and durable pivotal at-` tachment to the sound box casing is attained, in which the vibration of the needle or stylus is effectively conned to a single plane without interference to tree vibration in such plane, and with which lost motion or play at the point ,of pivotal connection 1s etectively prevented as well and any tendency to movement of the parts under either side or torsional stresses `is resisted in an etlicient manner, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

The other end of the plate extension l2 is formed with an orifice for the passage oiabinding screw 13 by which saidplate extension is rigidly at` tached to a side extension or lug lllot' the sound box casing l, as shown more particularly in Figs. l and 2, and inthe preferred construction shown, the outer end oit the lug lll is `formed witha depending rib 14 the under tace of which altords bearing for the end of theplate extension l2 and provides clearance between the main portion ot such plate `extension and the adjacent face ot the sound boX casing.
n the present improvement ythe plate extension l2 constitutes the resilient `pivotal connection between the sound box casing and the stylus mounting to permit ot the normal vibration of said stylus mounting in actual use. In connection therewith any tendency` to undue lateral swing of the stylus mount ing, with a twisting' action on the plate exe tension l2, is prevented by the following arrangement oi" parts 15 designates side wings of the flat web form shown, extending upwardly in opposite directions from the sides of the stylus car,- rying post or stem 8, with their upper ends in transverse spaced relation to the plate extension 12 aforesaid, and with said upper ends formed with bends 16 of the open hook shape as shown and adapted for rocking or pivotal engagement with the hereinafter described complementary ridges associated with the sound box casing 1.
I7 designates a crescent shape plate having at its mid-length an orifice for the passage of the biiiding screw 13 aforesaid, and by which it is attached to the underside of the plate extension 12 and preferably in spaced relation thereto by means of an intermediate washer or spacing plate 1S, as shown in Fig. l.
19 designates upturned bearing ridges formed on the ends of the plate 17' aforesaid, and having transverse spaced relation corresponding with that of the knuckles 16 of the wings 15 of the stylus carrying post and adapted for interengagement therewith and form a loose rocking pivotal connection for the parts.
The associated bends 16 and bearing ridges 19 have no part in the normal vibratory movement of the stylus mounting to operatev the sound producing diaphragm, and are intended solely to preventundue lateral vibration of the stylus mounting.` In consequence the lit between said bends and ridges is preferably a loose one, as indicated by extended experimental use of the appliance,

I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z- 1. In combination, asound box casing carrying a diaphragm, a stylus carrying post having a fixedly attached angularly arranged resilient plate extension at one end an-d an angularly arranged bar intermediate of its length and operatively connected to the diaphragm, and means for ixedly attaching` an end of said resilient plate extension to the sound box casing, the stylus carrying postbeing provided with oppositely extending lateral wings having bearing engagementwith va ixed part of the sound box casing to resist lateral vibration of the stylus carrying post.
2. In combination, a sound box casing carrying a diaphragm, a stylus carrying post having a ixedly attached angularly arranged resilient plate extension at one end and an angularly arranged bar intermediate of its length and operatively conneited to the diaphragm, and means for fixedly attaching an end of said resilient plate extension to the sound box casing, the same comprising a transversely arranged confining plate and an attaching screw, the stylus carrying post being provided with opposite y extending lateral wings having bearing engagement with the ends of t ie aforesaid coniningfplate byl inter-engaging bend and ridge formations.

In combination, a sound box casing carrying a diaphragm, a stylus carrying post having a iixedly attached angularly arranged resilient plate extension at one end and an angularly arranged bar intermediate of its length and operatively connected to the diaphragm, means for lixedly attaching an end of said resilient plate extension to the sound box casing, the stylus carrying post being provided with oppositely extending lateral wings having bearing enVA gageinent with a fixed part of the sound box casing to resist lateral vibration of the stylus carrying bar, and depending pins on the sound box casing having earing contact with opposed faces of the lateral wings aforesaid, to position the parts.

In combination, a sound box casing carrying a diaphragm, a stylus carrying post having a fixedly attached angnlarly arranged resilient plate'extension at one end and an angularly arranged bar intermediate of its length and operatively connected to the diaphragm, means for fixedly attaching an end of said resilient plate extension to the sound box casing, the saine comprisingl a transversely arranged contining plate and an attaching screw, the stylus carrying post being provided with oppositely extending lateral wings having bearing engagement with the ends of the aforesaid conlining plat-e by inter-engaging bend and ridge formations, and depending pins on the sound box casing having bearing contact with opposed faces of the lateralwings aforesaid to position the parts."
