used on street railway cars, and an. object of the inventionis to provide a strap adjustable as to length to permit it ,to be extended or collapsed to pre-determined lengthsfor the convenience of the passengers using the strap, the length of the strap being variable to suit the individual he ght or arm length of the user.
provide a hanging strap as specified which comprises an advertisement carrying plate adapted to removably receive any suitable Another object of this invention is to type of an adv erti sement'which will be conspicuously displayed while thestrap is inuse.
"A further object of this inventioni'sto provide a strap as specified which comprises an attaching loop or strap carrying a supporting plate, to which a hand grip strap is adj ustably connected, the said connection being arranged to permit the free and easy adjustment of the hand grip strap relative to the carrying plate forjadjusting the length of the strap, and also to provide a spring for returning saidsections to their collapsed position andto the shortest length or the strap after it has been released.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying draW-- ings wherein: 1 I
Fig. l'is a front elevation oi the improved strap.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the improved strap. 1 Fig; '3 is a 'longitudinalsection through the improved'strap.
Fig. t is a front elevation of a modified Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through the modified form taken on the line55 of Fig.4.
ig; 6 is adetail perspective view of a modified form of theadvertising plate.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved hanging strap for use in street railway cars or analogous structures "be positioned over the carrying rod A, such 'ldlldlaldli comprises a supporting 1o0p l formed of a leather strap or the like which" is adapted to as carriedby street railway cars for the purpose ol' supporting the straps. The attaching loop 1 extends through a slot 2 in the upper end of the carrying plate 3,the said slot being formed by the punching out of a part of the metal which part is rounded upwardlyas shown. at a to prevent rupturing of the strap. The carrying plate 3 may be constructed of sheet metal or anysuitable material and it is provided with a longitudinallyextending slot5 adjacent one edge from which a plurality of downwardly inclining transverse branch slots 71 project. The end portions'of the slots '7 are slightly enlarged asshown at 8 to provide depressions for receiving the rivet or pin 9 which is carried by the strap carrying bar 10. The 75 rivet 9 has an enlargedheadll formed thereon for preventing longitudinal movement of the rivet out of either the longitudinal slot 5 or anyone of the branch slots 7 to prevent disconnection of the bar 10 and carrying plateS. The strap carrying bar. 10 has a hand grip strap lQcarried by its lower end, thesaid-strap being formed ina loop to permit firm gripping thereof by a passenger. A contractile spiral spring 13 is connected to the rivet 9 and to the carrying plate 3, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the dran ings, for returning the carrying bar 10 and grippin strap 12 to their uppermost positions alter it has been released by a pas- 9o senger. i
In use, when a tall person uses the strap, the rivet 11 is left in the uppermost'of the transverse branch slots 7, but when a shorter person uses the strap he may by a slight lateral. upward movement on the strap more the rivet into thevertical'slot 5, and'move it downwardly until the desired elevation of the gripping strap 12 is provided after which the rivet is moved into the adjacent transverse branch slot 7 for providing a rigid support for the gripping'strap 12- in its adjusted position. Whenthe grip aing strap 12 is releaserh the spring 13 will contract and owing to the upward incline of the branch slots towards their communication with the longitudinal slot 5 the rivet will be moved out oi. the branch slot and upwardly along the longitudinal slot 5 to the upper end of the latter. 1 10 detachably connecting the modified form of advertisement carrying plate to the strap structure. i
In Figs. 4: and 5 of the drawings, a modified form of the improved strap structure is shown, which modified form comprises the ,carrying plate 20 having the hanging or supporting loop 21 carried by its upper end, and for engagement over the rod A. The plate 20 is connected to the strap 21 by a rivet 23:whieh riveti's adapted to move into transverse slots 24: similar in construction to the slots 7 and co nmunicating with a longitudinal slot (not shown) in the plate 20. The strap 21 has a gripping loop 25 on its lower end, and it extends throughout substantially the entire length of the carrying plate 20 when the strap structure is in its collapsed position. An advertise- Inent carrying plate 27 which is constructed of. sheet metal or analogous material is provided and it has gripping spurs 28 struck therefrom which extend through one portion of the strap 24: as clearly shown in Fig. 5 to securelyianchor the plate 27 to the strap structure. A spring 29 is connected to the rivet 23 and to the carrying plate .20i ior moving the strap structure to its "collapsed position.
The advertising carrying plates 14, 14 and 27 preferably have channelsas indicated at 30 about their side edges and lower ends to provide a support for a suitable advertisement or placard. From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be apparent that a strap for street cars has been provided the length of which may be adjusted to suit the convenience of the passenger using the strap.
