Description

Jan. 10, 1933. J. J1 GRIFFIN SCORE AND TALLY DEVICE Filed April 17, 1951 INVENTOR. 7 Grffzl n dzmes Y 3% ATTOR EY Patented Jan. 10, 1933 UNITED STATES T GFFIQE SCORE AND TALLY DEVICE Application filed April 17, 1931. Serial No. 530,782.
This invention relates to devices adapted to be mounted upon an arm or leg of aperson,
and including means whereby the score or tally of a game may be recorded or consist- 5 ing or" a body portion upon which may be applied advertising or other matter; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described, the end portions of which are provided with interengaging means for adjusting the size of the device to fit snugly about an arm or leg for supporting a device thereon; a further object being to provide means for supporting a pen, pencil or other marking member in connection with the device to facilitate the recording of scores or points; a further object being to provide a device of the class specified made from a strip or sheet of heavy paper, cardboard or similar material, which is printed, lithographed or otherwise characterized to render the same practical in recording scores or points of various kinds and classes of games;
a further object being to provide a device of the class specified which is formed into a ring or loop, one end portion of the ring being apertured to receive a tongue portion on the other end thereof, said tongue portion having means engaging the first named end of the device in retaining the end portions in different positions of adjustment to govern the size of the loop or ring; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, which issimple in construction,
" efiicient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the folloi *ing specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form of device which I employ, indicating the method of its use.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the device shown in Fig. l and,
Fig. 3 is a plan view otthe device shown in Figs. 1 and 2, extended.
My invention relates particularly to the provision of a strip-like device adapted to be formed into a ring or loop having means at the end portions of the device for interengaging and interlocking said ends in adjustably securing the same together, to-vary the size I, of the loop, to fit snugly about an arm or leg of a wearer. The device has a score or tally section upon which may be recordedthe points scored in the playing of games of various kinds and classes. I
c For example, in recording baseball, tootball, tennis, polo, and similar scores, the device may be arranged upon an arm, or if desired, men and boys mayarrange the deviceupon the leg above the knee to facilitate the recording of the score, the advantage being that the device is self-supporting and maintained in predetermined position at all times. In like manner, the device may be used by golfers in playing the game of golf, or by thosev engaged in playing miniature golf It will also be understood that the device may be used in recording the scores of other games including the several card games, and especially in progressive games of this kind where it is necessary for a player to retain the score card or tally in traveling from table to table. I
'- In Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, I have shown one method of carrying my invention into efiect. In said figures, thedevice consists of an elongated strip 10 having a central display and/or recording section 11 at one end of which is a reduced tongue portion 12. The other end 13 has a plurality or" spaced 3 siitsor apertures 14 or such length as to receive the tongue 12, said tongue being tashioned to form a plurality of longitudinally spaced retaining clips or lugs 15 adapted to engage one wall of either or both of the slits 14 in securing the tongue 12 against separation from the end portion 13 of the device when mounted upon the body of the wearer. In this connection, it will be understood that thearcuate clips are regularlyspaced and the transverse slits are spaced apart afdistance which is a multiple of the space between consecutive clipsso that one clip will pass through one slit and another clip through the other slit to form a double retaining or se F9 curing means for the tongue. When the tongue 12 is attached to the end portion 13, the device is in the form of a ring or loop, the size of which is adjusted to suit the wearer by virtue of the plurality of clips or lugs 15 employed.
It will also be understood that a marking device such as a pencil 16 may be mounted within one or more of the clips 15 in the manner indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The section 11 of the device will be printed, lithographed or otherwise characterized, as may also the end portion 13 as well as the tongue 12, to produce a neat, ornamental appearance to the entire device, it being understood that the shape of the device may be modified to be consistent with the ornamental 'efiects desired, as in the production of tallies we'il known in the art. The section 11 may also include an area devoted to the recording of a score for any kind or class of game in the manner heretofore specified, itbeing understood that the arrangement of the score recording area will be printed or otherwise marked to suit the particular game for which the score isto be recorded.
As heretofore stated, my invention is not limited to the particular outline of the device herein disclosed, and various other changes in and modifications of the device herein shown and described and the manner of its use ma be made within the scope of the appende claim without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A device of the class described comprising an elongated, strip-like body, one end of said body comprising a comparatively long section, the other end of said body being reduced to form a tongue member of less length than said section, the free end portion of said section having longitudinally spaced transverse slits through which said tongue memher is adapted to pass, the central portion of the tongue member being cut transversely at relatively close and regularly spaced intervals longitudinally with respect theretov to form a plurality of curved arcuate retaining clips, said transverse slits being spaced apart a d stance which is a multiple of the space between consecutive clips so that one clip will engage one side wall of one slit'and another clip the side wall of another slit to form a double catch for securing said body in the form of a ring or loop of different sizes. y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name this 14th day of April, 1931.
