HORACE Bunn, or riiimiirsnrnIA, rE'NNsYLvA'N'IKAS f GRATE BAR.
Application filed January 4,:1921.
To all whom t may concern:
'Be it known that lI, HORACE BUDD, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, haveI invented a certain new and useful Improved Grate Bar,
of which the following is a specification.
The invention has relation to and is an improvement upon the grate bars shown in my United States Letters and #837,543 dated December Q0, .1904: and December 4, 1906 respectively. lVhile the grate bars shownin my patents are so said cent grate bars nevertheless I have discovered that by increasing the size of such uninterrupted air space the efliciency of the grate as a whole is materially enhanced. To increase such air space however I have found it necessary to eect certain changes in the. construction of the grate bars. IIeretofore the webs of my grate bars were of comparatively thin cross-section Aand had a plane surface longitudinally considered. j The space between the teeth of the grate bars, which teeth project laterally from such web, according to my .former construction ended flush with the plane faces of said web. Therefore, to increase this space it would be necessary to encroach upon the web cross# section with the consequent weakening of the web. According to the presentl invention I make the web wedge-shaped in crosssection and longitudinally considered I make it curved or fluted and I arrange the teeth, which are in staggered relation, so that a space between adjacent teeth registers with a concaved portion of the web. Thus `while the teeth do not exceed the late-ral extent of the teeth shown in my said patents the space between adjacent teeth exceeds lateral depth formerly attained. j
The leading object of the present invention resides in the provision of means'tending to provide a commercially valuable grate bar possessed of the advantages above enumerated. With this and other objects in view the invention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features `and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which:
Patent #778,106
constructed that uninter-v rupted air space is present between adja-y v est or top portion,
.at its top than it is seriai No. 435,229.
Fig. l, is a yview of thenunderside of so mucliof'a grate bar'asis necessary to theV understanding of the invention.
Fig. 2, is a view in side elevationof` said section of grate bar. i n
end view of the grate bar,y
Fig. 3, is an and a grate bar embodying features of thefin-` illustrating my invenin the accompanying which my invention consists can be variously arranged land vention is not limited to the precise yarrange-l ment and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
In the drawingslO designates a web lwhich' in crosssection materiallyincreases in width from'its base to its top andwhich longitudinally considered is curved or fluted. Enf
Fig. 4, is a fragmentary view, in plan-,of
thereof which is at pres i vorganized and that my 'in-I esv although it is to be under# y tended laterally from the web, at its thick- 'l upon each side thereof, are fa plurality ofspacedteeth 1l, disposed in staggered relation and arrangedobliquely with respect tothe "horizontal axis of the web.y A space ll2 between adjacent teeth registers withl a concaved portion 13 of the web while a convened portion 14 of the web merges with a tooth 11. Thus a yspace 12 `may befmade relatively deep laterally considered to providev a `maximum airfspace. co-nvexed portion 14 is considerably thicker viding a re-enforcement for a tooth, B
this construction the web at its top is quite at its bottom thus prothick and tapers toward its bottom thus providing strength and stability where' most needed and 'atthesametime providing for unrestricted air-space of maximum capacity when grate bars are arrangedside by side and end to end als in my saidpatents. i
It will now be apparentthat I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage. enumer ated asde'sirable in the statement of' vention and the above descriptionand while I have in the ypresent instance shown and describedthe preferred embodiment thereof which has been lfound in practice to give satthe insfactory and reliable results, it is to beunj oppoeite sides of Said web in its thickest parte. in staggered relation and so arranged that enen Speee between adjacent teeth registers with a conceived portion of the web', the tine-keet part of each eonvexed portion merg- .ing` upon a Curved line With the underside of 2L tooth to form a reinforcement.
In testimony whereof, l have hereunto Signed iny name.
HORACE BUDD.
