LOCOMOTIVE AND THE LIKE PROVIDED WITH AIR COOLER PURPOSES.
non connnivsrive Application filed March 11 1919. Serial No. 282,049.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, FnnDRIK LJUNG- sTRoM, subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Brevik, Lidingon, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotives and the like Provided with Air Coolers for Condensing Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to locomotives and the like provided with air coolers for condensing purposes, and the invention primarily consists in the positioning of the driving motor at the end of the cooler. By this arrangement the great advantage is obtained that the whole of the cross section of the condenser car may be utilized for the con denser and the cooler, besides which the shortest possible connections are attained between the boiler and the motor on one hand, and between the motor and the cooler on the other hand. In this way, the motor, too, will occupy the smallest space possible.
The accompanying drawing, whichrepresent-s a side elevation of a boiler car and a condenser car connected with one another,
shows the special arrangement of the motor according to this invention.
As in the case of a high vacuum being used, the steam conduit between the driving motor 1 and the condenser becomes very large, the .motor is preferably disposed on the condenser car 2 directly at the end of the air cooler 2, and in such case the energy ofv the motor is transmitted to the wheels of the condenser car. The steam motor is preferably of the rotary type and transmits its power to the wheels 4 by means of cranks and connecting rods 3. In cars driven byv electric 1notors,the same means are employed for transmitting power to the driving 40 wheels,
The steam generating boiler 5 is suitably disposed on a separate car frame, preferably in front of the condenser'car, as indicated in the drawing. The steam may for instance be conducted from the boiler to the motor through a flexible or articulated conduit between the cars, (not shown in the drawing).
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is In a locomotive or the like having a steam generating boiler placed on a separate car and an air cooler for condensing purposes on another car, a driving steam motor for the locomotive placed solely on the cooler car at the end of the cooler "facing the boiler.
