Description

F. LJUNGSTRUM. TURBINE DRIVEN LOCOMOTIVE.
APPLICATION FILED OCT-19.1921.

FREDRIK IJUNGSTRQM, OF BREVIK, LIDINGON, SWEDEN, ASSIGNOR TO AKTIE- BOLAGET IJUNGSTROMS ANGTURBIN, OF STOCKHOL'M, SWEDEN, A CORPORA- TION.
TURBINE-DRIVEN LOCOMOTIVE.
Application filed October 19, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDRIK LJUNGSTROM, Chief Engineer, subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Brevik, Lidingon, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turbine-Driven Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
In locomotives in which the driving wheels are driven by means of turbines by the a1d of crank and connecting rod, for instance with assistance of toothed gearings, and provided with a boiler carriage and a condenser placed on a separate carriage 1t has been proposed to place aggregates of toothed gearings connected w1th the turblne on the condenser carriage. In the case of large locomotives it has proved difficult to place within the limited space a system of toothed gearings together with a turbine producing the whole amount of power of the locomotive.
This invention relates to an arrangement in locomotives of the first-named type and its object is to dispose the turbine systems and the corresponding driving devlces in such manner that locomotives of considerably greater efficiency than has hitherto been the case may be manufactured. The invention consists chiefly in that one or more h gh pressure turbine systems and corresponding driving devices, for instance toothed gearings, are mounted on the boiler carriage and one or more low pressure turbine systems and corresponding driving devices, for mstance toothed gearings, on the condenser carriage. By this the advantage is obtalned that the necessary flexible steam conduit connection between the two carriages may be placed in a steam pipe of smaller d1- ameter than is the case, if two turbine systems independent of each other be mounted on either carriage, since in this case the said connection has to be placed in an outlet conduit from a turbine to the condenser, this conduit being necessarily of considerably greater diameter. O
In the accompanying drawmg Flgures 1 and 2 illustrate different embodiments of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the boiler carriage is indicated by 1 and the condenser carriage by 2. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 there is mounted a toothed gear system together with the turbine on either Specification of Letters Patent.

carriage, the whole high pressure system being collocated at a place in the boiler carriage and the whole low pressure system at a place in the condenser carriage. The high pressure turbine system is indicated by 3 and the low pressure turbine system by 4. The waste steam from the turbine system 3 is conducted to the turbine system 4 from one carriage to the other, and in the steam conduit between the systems a joint or flexible connection 5 is arranged. The waste steam from the turbine system 4 is conducted directly to the water tank of the condenser. Each turbine is connected with a toothed gearing transmitting power to the driving wheels by means of crank and connecting rod. Said turbine systems with toothed gearings may also be mounted at any other place on the carriages, as for instance on the foremost part of the boiler carriage and the rearmost part of the condenser carriage. It is however more advantageous to place the systems in such manner that the shortest possible steam conduits are obtained.
Accordinggto the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, two turbine systems together with toothed gearings are disposed on either carriage and placed at'each end of the. carriage. Also in this case the systems placed on the boiler carriage consist of high pressure turbines and the systems on the condenser carriage of low pressure turbines. As will appear from Fig. 2, the waste steam is conducted from the system 6 on the foremost part of the boiler carriage to the system 7 on the rearmost part of the same carriage and then to the system 8 on the foremost part of the condenser carriage. The steam is then conducted to the system 9 on the rearmost part of the condenser carriage and finally to the water tank of the condenser carriage 2. The steam conduit between the two carriages is also in this case provided with a flexible connection 5. The turbines may also be disposed in other manner provided the waste steam from the turbines of the boiler carriage be not conducted directly to the condenser, since in this case an outlet conduit with a diameter too great to make a suitable arrangement of a flexible connection possible will be neces-, sary. The toothed gear systems with turbines may be disposed on bogies or on rigid frames. The system 6 is altogether placed on a bogie, and owing thereto the steam con duits to the same are to be made flexible, for instance by the aid of long pipes. The system 9 is altogether placed on the condenser receptacle or the carriage frame, and therefore the driving device is arranged in a manner known from the construction in which the machine is disposed on the frame and the driving device on a bogie. The driving device on the rearmost part of the boiler carriage is preferably disposed below the coal bunker 1O placed .on the boiler carriage. I
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In locomotives in which the driving wheels are actuated by turbines with the assistance of toothed gearings, and provided. with a boiler carriage and a condenser placed on a separate carria e,the arrangement that one or more big pressure turbine systems with driving devices are disposed on the boiler carriage and one or more low pressure turbine systems with driving devices are disposed on the condenser carriage.
2 An arrangement according to claim 1, characterized by a-high ressure turbine system with a driving device consisting of toothed gearing, being disposed on the rear part of the boiler carriage and a low pressure turbine system with a driving device consisting oftoothed gearing, on the fore part of they condenser carriage.
3. An arrangement accordlng to claim 1,
characterized by a turbine system with driving device, consisting of toothed gearing, being disposed at either end of both carriages.
4. An arrangement according to claim 1, characterized by a turbine system with driving device, consisting of toothed gearing, being disposed at either end of both carriages on bogies.
5 In locomotives in which the driving wheels are actuated by means of crank and connecting. rods with the assistance of toothed gearings, and provided with a boiler carriage and a condenser placed on a sepa rate carriage, the arrangement that one or more high pressure turbine systems with driving devices are disposed on the boiler carriage and one or more low pressure turbine systems with driving devices are disposed on the condenser carriage.
6. In locomotives in which the driving wheels are actuated by means of crank and connecting rods with the assistance of toothed gearings, the arrangement of a hi h pressure turbine system with a drivin evice consisting of toothed earings, ing disposed on the rear part 0 the boiler carriage and-a low pressure turbine system with a drivin device consisting of toothed gearings, on 518 fore part of the condenser carriage.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
