Be it known that I, WARREN O. LYNCH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Berkeley, county of Alameda, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Stilfener for Folding Books, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to stiffeners for folding books and its principal object is to provide a stifi'ener for folding check books as now commonly used and furnished by banks to their clients. It is well known that thecheck books now commonly used usually comprise, besidesl the detachable checks to be torn out of the books, a stub for each blank check which is used for making a memorandum of the money withdrawn. `Check books of this character are usually rectangular in shape and adapted to be :folded along a central line running parallel to the edge along which the book is bound. In using this book it.r becomes necessaryto unfold the same but ordinarily the crease caused in each check by folding the book extends directly through that portion of the check on which most of the writing is to'be done, and the unfolded check has a tendency` to bend along this crease which makes it very inconvenient for the operator to write the check, especially if he has no solid foundation on which to lay the book.

It is the object of my invention to provide a convenient, economical and simple means by which the checks can be flattened so that the crease formed by the folding disappears altogether and the check may be written on without any difficulty. e p

In the accompanyingdrawing I show the preferred form of my invention in connecn tion with a check book, it being understood that I do not wish to conline myself to check books as such but claim the invention with reference to any other books of similar form and similarly used. In the drawing, Figure .l represents a perspective view of a. check book provided with my stiifener in its un` folded condition; Figure 2 a folded check book having my stiliener attached thereto; Figure 3 a plan view of my stilener illusf tratcd by itself, and Figure 4. a cross section through the same along line it-lof Figure 8.

The check book (l) comprises a plurality of stubs (2) and blank checks (3) bound into book form and enclosed in the case (4). `When the book is not in use the blank checks Specificatonof Letters Patent.`

Thus the folding of the book reduces its lateral extension by about one half and it carried in the pocket. which is shown in detail in yFigures 3 and 4, comprises an ordinary plate (ll) of rectangular form having two llanges (l2) which are bent inwardly as shown at (lll). length of the plate (9) dependsupon the length of the check book narily equal about one half ofthe same; In width the plate is co-ertensive` with the width of the check book so that the latter may be received in the channel-shaped grooves formedv by the anges (l2). The latterflanges are provided at their ends with projections (16) which serve to insure a better' contact between the check book and the flanges. f

.To'use my stiffener I only need toslip the same on the unfolded check book,` slide the same tothe eXtreme left when it is desired to close the check book, and slide the same to the right when the check book is unfolded and 1t is desired to use the same.

A stiffenerr for a folding' book of the character described adapted to stiften the saine in its folded and in its yunfolded condition comprising a stili'ening plate substantially cci-extensive with the folded book having flanges thereon adapted to slidably engage the upper and lower edg' ys of the body p0rtion of the book and to be slid along the said edges when the book is unfolded so as to stiften the creased portion of the book. a large central portion of the flanges being disclose the reading while the remaining from the ends of the matter onr the check projections extending' anges insure a lirm plate and the book.
