" IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT AND BERRY BASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,299, dated August 26,1873; application filed June 18, 1873.
.To all whom't't may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. SWAN and WILLIAM FINGH, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented a Fruit and Berry Basket; and we do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which itmost nearly appertains to make and use our said invention without further invention or experiment.
The object .of our invention is to provide an improvement in that class of baskets 'or boxes which are intended for containing and transporting the more perishable fruits, such as berries, &c.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of our invention, Figure l is a view of the blank after stamping. Fig. 2 is a 'sectional View of our basket. Fig. 3 is a perspective view.
AA is a veneer or thin wood blank, from which the box is made. This blank is stamped out in the -shape here shown by a'suitable cutting-machine, and is scarfed at B B, so that when the ends are folded or bent at right angles to each other the veneer will form the four inclined sides of a box, fastened as shown `at Fig. 2. From the manner of cutting the blank it will be seen that the top of the box will be in a horizontal plane as it stands, while the middle of each side at the bottom will curve upward, as at Gg, so that the corners forma sort of short leg upon which the boxY stands. Another strip of veneer is scarfed across so as to form a bottom, C, and two side strips, D D, which lie against two of the sides of the box, as at iirst formed. This strip is so fastened to the side A that the bottom G will stand at a short distance above the level of the corner posts,.and this, with the form of the lower edge of the sides of the box, insures a perfectly free circulation of air beneath the box. In order to protect the top of the fruit against dust and other ill effects, one of the side strips D is continued upward until it can be scarfed at the point E, where it is level with the top of the basket, and this allows the upper iiap F to be folded down and form a cover for the box.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'A fruit-box constructed of the blank A,
.having the bottom of each side portion concaved, as shown in combination with the blank D,cut and inserted to form an elevated bottom, G, double sides, and a top, F, substantially as set forth. l
In Witness whereof we hereunto set our hands and seals.
