Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANK A. WILsoN, grocer, of the city of St. Catharines, in the county of Lincoln, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing Cases, Boxes, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in packing cases, boxes, and the like; and the object of the invention is to devise a light, inexpensive, durable, and convenient box and cover therefor in which the boxes when piled together will occupy but a minimum space and there will be no danger of the fruit or other perishable contents of the box being crushed, and thereby to a more or less extent destroyed; and it consists, essentially, of a case having the upper edge of one end flush with the upper edges of the sides of the case and the opposite end extending upwardly to a point below the level of the sides, the aforesaid end being provided with a groove the lower side of which is level with the upper edge of the opposite end and a lid or cover designed to extend at one end into the crossgroove and lie on the top edge of the opposite end, the end of the cover being provided with a cleat and being designed to be nailed onto the opposite end, the upper side of the cleat being flush with the top edge, of the sides and the major portion of the lid extending below them, as hereinafter described.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my case or box, showing the lid raised and in a position in which it will be inserted and utilized as a lever to press down the fruit closely into the case. Fig. 2 is a view of the case with the lid closed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the case with the lid in the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section showing the lid closed down.

In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.

A A are the sides of the box, which may be formed of any number of boards desired and of any required size, and B the bottom, to which the bottom edges of the sides A A are secured.

C is one end formed in any suitable manner and secured to the ends of the sides. The end O extends up to a point flush with the top of the sidesand is rovided with a groove 0 below the level of t e top of the sides. 0 is the opposite end of the box, which is securely fastened to the opposite ends of the sides and extends up to a point below the level of the tops of the sides and flush with the bottom side of the groove 0.

D is the lid, which may be formed of one or two boards, such lid being provided with a cross-cleat (i, said cleat being near one end of the lid.

It will be noticed that the lid D is inserted into the groove 0 after the case has been filled, and such lid may be used somewhat like a lever and be brought downwardly against the fruit, so as to closely pack the fruit, and thereby prevent it from moving during shipment and being bruised or destroyed. The lever D is brought down into the position shown in Fig. 3, and when so brought down the cleat d, with the free edge, may be secured by nails to the top edge of the end '0. In this position it will be noticed that the portion of the lid is below the level of the top of the sides A A but the cleat d is arranged on a level with the top of the sides, so thatthere is a protecting edge all around the lid or cover to sustain the weight of the boxes which may be placed on top of it and prevent crushing in the top or lid of the,

I do not wish to make any claim to grooving the end of a box, nor to a cover provided with one or more cleats, nor to the form of the box generally.

What I claim as my invention is In a box, case or the like, the combination with the box having one end higher than the other, said high end being provided with a groove having the bottom flush with the top of the oppositely-located end, and sides of the same height as the higher end, of a lid designed to have the inner end inserted in the groove and to be swung down into and out of position on the short end of the box, and a single cleat fastened to the lid, a short distance from the end thereof and extending from side to side of the same and designed to form with the top edges a continuous flush edge around the box said cleat, when the lid is in position, lying in the vertical plane of the short end of the box as specified.
