R. D. McBRIAN. OIL TEST COCK OPERATING MEANS FOR FORD CARS.
APPLICATION mm 5.23. 192i.

RQBEBJT D. MGBBIAN, 0F RIPON, CALIFORNIA:
GIL-TEST-GOCK-OPERATING MEANS FOB/D CARS.
il,d2,ll1l9.
Application filed April 23,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, lilonnn'r D. Moldnmis, a citizen of the United States, residing at llipon, county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in tlil l est-Uoclz-c perating Means for Ford Cars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to attachments for Ford. automobiles, the principal object being to provide means whereby the main oil test-cock in the crank case may be more easily opened and closed than is possible with the standard equipment provided.
As every one who is acquainted with Ford cars know, two pet cocks are provided in the crank ease of the engine, an upper and a lower one, both communicating with the oil-supply in the crank case. There being no oil-gauge on the dash of a Ford car, it is the duty of every driver of such a car, if he wishes to keep the same in good running condition and avoid probable bu rnt-out bearings due to the depletion of the oil supply, to open these cocks every so often, especially the upper one, to test the oil level, since for proper operation of the engine this level should always be kept above the upper cock.
To do this however with the equipment ordinarily provided, means squatting down or kneeling on the ground and reaching an arm under the running board or fender to reach and open this cock. Since the under side of the running board etc. are invariably coated with dust or mud, it is inevitable that the operator soils his clothes considerably in Specification of Letters Patent.

of his soiling his hand and clothes in the slightest.
I have also arranged the attachment so that it will not have a cumbersome or unsightly appearance, and which can be attached without removing any standard parts of the car.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Fig. l is a. perspective outline of a por tion of a Ford car, viewed from the rear, and showing my improved cock-operating attachment.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary end elevation of the operating handle and its position-retaming catch.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the crank case of the engine having in the usual location, which is on the right hand side thereon looking forward, the upper and lower oil test-cocks 2 and 3 respectively.
To suit the cock 2 for my purpose, the same is turned so that the handle 2 thereof faces toward the adjacent outer side of the car.
To said handle 2, which is the type of pet-cock used on Ford cars are flat members, said cock opening wide with a quarter turn of the handle from closed position, I flexibly connect a rod 4 which extends through the fender-plate 5 above the running board 6, said plate forming the hearingfor the rod and being substantially at right angles to said rod. 011 the outer end of the rod, immediately adjacent the plate 5, is fixed a spring arm 7, following the contour of the plate, and normally projecting downwards when the cock is closed. On the lower end of the arm is a knob or bottom 8, which is adapted to be grasped by the fin gers to turn the arm and rod.
To hold said arm in its closed position, ll provide a transversely positioned strip 9 fixed to the fender 5 and provided with a shallow groove 10 extending lengthwise of the arm, being adapted to receive the width of the same therein.
Thus the cock is prevented from arring open unnoticed, which can happen at present, and which action of course soon depletes the oil supply. The spring construction of the arm allows it to be readily sprung to clear the groove in the strip 9 or to be snapped in place therein.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to and do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A holding means for the operating rod of a pet cock comprising a spring arm fixed on the outer end of the rod said arm forminga handle whereby the rod is turned and a grooved plate fixed with respect to the cock and rod, the groove in said plate being adapted to receive the outer end of the arm when the pet cock is closed.
2. A holding means for the operating rod of a pet cock comprising a spring arm fixed on the outer end of the rod and substantially at right angles thereto, and a strip at right angles to the arm and having a pair of spaced projections fixed relative to the cock and positioned to receive the outer end of the arm therebetween when the cock is closed, Said arm serving as a handle and being adapted to be sprung past said projections to open the'cock.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ROBERT D. MGBRIAN.
