Description

G. A. LEXANDER. WRENCH. APPLICATIUN 51151) AUG-25. 1920.
INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY.
a L 6x61 71126? A? E if;
GEORGE A. LEXANDER, 0F BELMONT, MASSACHUSETTS.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 25, 1920. Serial No. 405,788.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. Lnxnnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belmont, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, relatively inexpensive and con venient wrench which may be used in general machine work and shop service and may be readily and quickly adjusted to suit any desired size or diameter of object to be engaged thereby, the adjustment being such as to be readily effected by the hand which grasps the wrench to avoid the use of both hands in the adjustment; and with this obj ect in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view or rear view of the Wrench,
Figure 2 is a side view of the same with the side plate omitted.
Figure 3 is a side elevation partly in section, illustrating the rack plate secured to the shank.
The wrench consists essentially of a shank secured in a groove formed in the shank,
said dog being yieldingly held in its engaging position by a spring 21 and being fitted at its forward or exposed end with o a bearing head 22 which is preferably roughened or knurled as shown in Figure 1 to the end that the thumb of the hand by which the wrench is grasped may be applied to release the movable jaw so that the latter may be quickly adjusted to the desired position for engagement with the desired object such as a nut or bolt head or the like. Recess 16 is located intermediate mounting portions 24; and 2et 'which contact with shank 10 as seen in Figure 2. Portion 2& is curved at 17 to engage and cooperate with a curved portion 17 of the pawl 17. i
It will be noted that in addition to the advantage of effecting a quick adjustment of the movable jaw, the wrench as described presents a substantially unobstructed exterior surface there being no lateral or projecting parts for engagement with surrounding objects or serving to interfere with the use of the wrench in restricted spaces, and the locking dog is completely housed within the movable jaw being covered by the removable plate 23 which is secured in place by screws 24,- and which when displaced will release the dog for re moval, cleaning, repair and the like.
Having this described my invention what i claim is i A wrench having aws, a shank extending from one jaw, the other aw being movable along the shank, the movable jaw having a recess opening at one side and mounting portions on opposite sides of the recess to contact with said shank, a pawl in said recess to cooperate with the shank engageable with said portions to limit its movement in opposite directions, said movable jaw having a substantially inclined surface, a spring between one extremity of the operating end of the pawl and one of said portions to urge the operating end of the pawl beyond said surface, said end having an outer surface substantially merging with said surface, the opposite extremity of said end being curved and the adjacent mounting portion being correspondingly curved, a closure plate over said recess, pawl and spring, and removable securing members common to said plate and said portions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
