WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 24. 1921.
1,399,265, Patented Dec. 6, 1921.
I \uunum gwvemtom UNITED STATEEl OSCAR H. LAY, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 24, 1921. Serial No. 455,185.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR H. LAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches, the primary object of which is to provide a wrench which may be used with equal facilities either as a pipe wrench or a nut wrench.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple type of wrench having an adjustable aw capable of only a single adjustment but being so constructed as to accommodate practically any standard size of pipe or nut and to positively hold the same during operation of the wrench handle.
The above and other objects of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the following description of the present preferred embodiment of the invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1, is a side elevational view of a wrench constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2, is a similar view, partly in section, to disclose details.
Fig. 8, is a front elevational view of the wrench.
Fig. 4, is a perspective view of the adjustable jaw of the wrench.
Fig. 5, is a sectional view taken transversely through the wrench on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 6, is an elevational view of the bolt and nut used to hold one of the jaws in a predetermined position.
In the drawings, a shank or handle 7 is shown, which may be of the usual or any desired type and made of metal or other suitable material. One end of the handle is formed to provide a rigid jaw 8, the inner face of which is formed to provide teeth 9. The inner end of said jaw 8 is recessed as indicated at 10.
The handle or shank 7 has movably mounted thereon a jaw 11, the working face of which is inclined and formed to provide teeth 12. The upper terminal of said jaw is extended as indicated at 13 and equipped with teeth 14 which are adapted for engage ment with an objectwhich may be passed between the jaws 8 and 11 in order to augment the grip or purchase obtained on said object. WVhen .the jaws are in va closed position, as shown in Fig. 1, the upper end of the portion 13 will be positioned in the recess 10 of the rigid outer jaw 8.
In order to retain the inner adjustable jaw 11 in a predetermined position, a stud 15 is provided, portions of the shank, on opposite sides, being removed to provide flat faces 16. One end of the shank is formed to provide a head 17 and the opposite end formed to provide a screw threaded terminal 18 upon which is mounted a nut 19. This stud extends through apertures 20 formed in the adjustable jaw 11 and through a slot 21 formed in the handle 7 adjacent the jaw 8. It will be noted that the opposite ends of the slot 21 are of a circular configuration and are connected by a constricted neck through which the flat faces 16 of the stud will be permitted to pass when it is desired to adjust the jaw 11.
In use of this device, the jaws may be set if desired in the position shown in Figs. 1 to 3, in which position the stud l5 lies in the upper end of the slot 21 and is turned so as to prevent movement of said stud through the slot. When it is desired to adjust the jaw 11, the stud may be readily turned by the fingers of the user so as to permit the flat sides thereof to pass through the constricted portion of the slot. When the stud reaches the lower end of the slot, it is again rotated to prevent upward movement of the stud. Consequently, the adjustable jaw is capable of assuming only two different positions which, however, will be sufficient to accommodate standard sizes of pipe, with which a wrench is usually engaged, as well as standard sizes of nuts. The inherent formation of the lower jaw enables the wrench to be used with various sizes of nuts or pi es without any adjustment whatsoever. he stud 16 may, of course, be readily removed, if desired, by merely disengaging the nut 19 in an obvious manner.
Various changes may be made in this device, especially in the details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts within the scope of the appended claim:
lVhat is claimed is:
A wrench including a handle equipped with a jaw on one end, a jaw movably mounted on said handle and provided with an inclined toothed working face cooperable Patented Dec. 6, 1921.
engageable with the other to augment the grippiniaotion of said jaws; t
with the first aw, a portion of one of its ends extended and jaw and toothed said movable jaw having In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two wltnesses.
