Description

PROTECTIVE GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application-filed July 31, 1920. Serial I-To. 400 ,'368..
To all 20/10/12 it may Coulee/wt:
Re it known that I, AMANDA 0. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, Kings County, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Imnpvements in Protective Garments, of which the followingis afull, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wearing apparel, and the same hasfor its object more particularly to provide a pro tective garment for women, which may be conveniently adjusted over the usual skirt or garment to be protected, and serve to envelope and protect the same.
Furthensaidl invention has for its object to providev aneat, simple and eflicient garment comprising an under, bag-like portion which is adapted to receive andloosely sup- I port 1n ralsed position the skirt or garment of the wearer, and an outer, or sklrt portion. attached to the under bag-like portion, serving to conceal the same, and the skirt supported and confined within said bag-like Further, said invention has for its object to provide a protective garment comprising an outer or skirt portion, and an under, baglike portion which is very loose or full so asto receive and loosely support the usual skirt of the wearer, and cuffs at the lower ends of said bag-like portionadapted to be secured to and embrace the knees, and the portions of the legs immediately adjacent thereto in order to maintain the enveloped skirt in raised position within said bag-like .portion.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends my invention consists in the novel, details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 shows one form of garment con structed according to and embodying my said invention; said garment being shown in position upon the wearer, and partly broken away and in section in order more clearly to illustrate the same;
Fig. 2 is a front view of the garment, and
Fig. 3 isa back view the same, with the outer sk rt portion partly broken away'to Patented June 6,
disclose the'bag like under garment portion.
In said drawin gs 10, designates the garmentas a whole comprising a very full, baglike under portion 11, and an outer skirt or covering portion 12. The under portion 11 has separated openings at its lower edge to which are secured tubular portions or cuffs 13, 13 whose adjacent edgesare'provided with suitable, cooperating fastening devices,
such as buttons, 13. I
The upper edge "of: said bag-like under portion'll, is conformed to the hips and waist of thewearer and is provided with a waist band lahaving a suitable fastening. U
The 'backof said under portion 11' has a placket 15 whose overlapping edges are pro; vided with stud and socket fastenings1'6,"1? for securing the" same together.- i 1 The outer or skirt portion 12 is secured along its uppered'ge by a row or rows of stitching 18 upon the outer side of the under portion 11 at a point corresponding substantially to the hip lineof'the wearer, and is provided at its rear'with a placket 19, registering with the placket 15015 the under portion 11. The placket 19 is also provided with stud and socket fastenings 20, 21 for securing the same together.
To give the skirt portion 12 greater fullness, the same may be provided with one or more pleats 22, as shown.
(In order partly to conceal the linewhere the upper edge of the skirt portion 12, is
secured to the bag-like under portion 11',
pockets 23 are secured to the garment where the upper-edge of the skirt portion 12 is se cured to the under portion 11. The pockets 23 are provided at their opposite vertical edges with upwardly projectingextensions 24- terminating at the waist band 14.
' In use the garment is intended to be worn over the usual dress or gown as a protection therefor, and to this end the under portion 11 of the protective garment isfirst adjusted in position upon the wearer, and the cuffs Hereupon the skirt of the dress or garment to be protected is gathered up and disposed '13, 13 fastened about'the legs of the wearer.
within the bag-like under portion 11, and
the waist band 14 then fastened about the waist of the wearer, and both the bag-like under portion 11, and the outer, skirt portion 12 thereby supported. properly in position upon the wearer leaving the legs practically free from the knees down.
lt is to be noted that my improved pro-- tective garment is particularly useful where the skirtof the garment to be protected is a tight or close-fitting one allowing of only limited freedom for the legs. By means of my garment the bottom edge of the garment may be raised to, and supported at or above the knees, and thereby permit of greater freedom for the movement of the feet.
Further, it is to be noted that the protective garment may be made of thin, light material so as to occupy little spacewhen the same is not in use.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-is:
l. A protective garment comprising a baglike portion loosely enveloping the hips and thighs of the wearer and adapted to receive the skirt of a garment to be protected,-open ings in the lower edge of said hag-like portion, cuffs extending from said openings and adapted to embrace the legs of the wearer at about the knees, means for securing said hag-like portion about the waist of the wearer, an outer sklrt portlon secured along its upper edge to said hag-llke portion at a point below the waist hand there the knees, a placket at the upper rear edge of said bag-like portion, means for securing the sametogether, and an outer skirt portion secured along its upper edge to said bag-like portion at a point below the waist line of said bag-like portion, and a placket registering with the placket in said hag-like portion for securing said skirt portion in position to envelope and conceal the lower portion of said bag-like portion and the legs of the wearer, substantially as specified.
Signedat the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, this 23rd day of March, one thousand nine hundred and twenty.
