NEEDLE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 29, 1920.

lNvEuron ATTORNEY 7| PATENT OFFICE.
GUIDO PITONI, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
NEEDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1922.
Application filed May 29, 1920. Serial No. 385,252.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GUIno PI'I'ONI, subject of the King of Italy, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Needles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to needles and has for an object the provision of a needle having an eye of novel formation which will permit of its being readily threaded.
Another object is the provision of a needle whose eye is provided with a normally closed entrance slot, through which the thread may be readily passed into said eye, and will be prevented from slipping out.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated injthe accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a View of a sewing machine needle provided with an eye constructed in ac cordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the eye end of the needle showing a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a view of a further modified form of eye shown in connection with a different type of needle.
Fig. 4C is an enlarged view of one end of the needle showing a still further modified form of eye.
Referring to the drawings in detail and especially to Figure 1. the reference character 10 indicates the shank of a needle, 11 the point and 12 the eye. The eye 12 is normally closed. and is provided with a pointed member 13 which extends into the eye, being located along the central longitudinal line of the needle. Extending into the shank of the needle from one side thereof is an entrance slot 14, the said slot passing through the extension 13 centrally of its point and providing spring fingers 15 which serve to normally close the entrance to the eye.
The needle may be readily threaded by inserting the thread in the entrance slot 14 and passing the same between the spring whereupon it will be fingers 15 into the eye,
against return passage through the held slot.
In Figure 2 there is illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention in which the entrance slot 14: has extending from its opposite walls spring fingers 16 which contact. at their free ends and serve to close the slot and act as an additional safeguard against the passage of the thread.
In Figure 3 the needle shown is of a different type having a point i? and an eye 18 located at a remote distance from the point. Extending into the eye 18 is a pointed projection 19, while the slot 20 provided in the said shank of the needle has an entrance slot into the eye. Also extending into the eye 18 is a spring finger 2].. one end. of which is secured at the en d of the slot 20. the finger being so shaped to form one wall of a continuation of the slot 20, with the free end of the spring finger contacting with or located adjacent to the pointed on tension 19.
The form of the invention shown in Figure 4 in similar to that just described, except that the slot 20 is provided. with inwardly extending spring fingers similar to the fingers l6 desrribcd in connection with Figure 2.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a pointed shank provided with an. eve and having a curved taperingslot formed there in and communicating with said eye. a pair of converging pointed members extending into said eye upon opposite sides of: said slot, and a plurality of spaced opposed spring fingers extending from the inner converging walls of said pointed members.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GUIDO PITONI.
