Description
G. l. BALKEY.
THIMBLE..
APPLICATION FILED IuLY 25,'I9I9.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
FIE'LEI- FISH:
UNITED STATES PAT ENT oFFIcE.
GEORGE J'. BALKEY, OF GLENSHAN PENNSYLVANIA.
THIMBLE.
Application filed July 25,
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE J. BALKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenshaw, county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thimbles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and improved sewing thimble, and more particularly to a thread-cutting thimble of the type shown and described in United States Letters Patent #1,260,952, granted to me on the 26th day of March, 1918.
The construction shown in the abovereferred to patent includes a bead formed on the lower end of the body, a recess formed in the bead, and a cutting edge formed at one end of said recess. W'hile the said construction is eliicient, I find that the cost of manufacture, especially of the less eX- pensive thimbles, is considerably more than I anticipated; also, that it is of considerable advantage in thimbles of this class to have a double, or two cutting edges.
Among the objects of the present invention are, to provide a thimble of the class referred to that may be formed with or without a bead and at a single operation; a construction enabling the thread cutting element to be struck up from the body atapoint spaced from the lower edge of the body, and at a single operation; and a construction embodying a plurality of cutting edges.
To these ends, the present invention consists of a sewing thimble formed with or without a bead at the open base of the body, and having a thread cutting element formed integral with the body, said cutting element being of such a character as to provide a plurality of'thread cutting edges.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate applications of my invention,
Figures l, 2 and 3 are elevational views of a thimble embodying my invention showing the cutting element thereofl of slightly diii'erent forms, as well as the lower edge of the thimble; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view, the section being` taken on line 4-4 of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the hollow body of the usual or any suitable construction. The wall of said body surrounding the open base may be varied, as shown in the several forms illustrated. Thus, in the form of Fig. 1, this portion 2 Specification of Letters Patent.-
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
1919. serial No. 313,194.
may be plain or it may be formed with a bead 2- as shown by Fig. 2, or the bead may be omitted and the portion formed as indicated by 2b in Fig. 3.
In all the forms of my invention shown, the body is provided with a thread cutting element. This cutting element is preferably formed integral with the body and in the manufacture of the article it is struck up from the material constituting the body portion. The cutting element is disposed on the body at a point spaced away from the lower edge thereof, and extends substantially parallel with said edge. The element is designed to project slightly away from the sur face of the body and to be substantially parallel therewith throughout its length, not sulliciently, however, to interfere in any manner with the use of the thimble, and the rear end of the element is raised out from the body as well as the pointed end.
The cutting element of the form of Fig. 1 is designated by the numeral 3 and said element is provided with a rounded point a and two cutting edges l) and c. In the form of Fig. 2, the cutting element 3a is provided with a rounded point and the two cutting edges. In this form, however, one of the cutting edges c2 isformed with an indented portion 4. The cutting element 3b of the form of Fig. 3 has its respective cutting edges L3 and b3 terminating in slightly curved portions 5. Otherwise, this cutting element 3b is similar to the cutting element of the form of Fig. l.
By providing the two cutting edges, the thread may be readily cut in two places and the construction is of such a character that the thread may be cut very close to the material being sewed, or at any length desired therefrom. The slightly projecting rounded point of the cutting element can be utilized for removing basting threads.
1What I'claim is:
1. A thimble comprising a hollow body having a substantially V-shaped thread cutting member struck up from the body at a point spaced from the lower edge of the body and relatively near .thereto and extending parallelly with the edge so that the edges of said struckup portion extend in a circumferential direction, said member being so struck out that it is substantially parallel with the outer surface of the body throughout its length.
2. A thimble comprising a substantially stantially parallel with the outer surface V-shaped thread cutting member struck up of theJ body throughout its length. 10 from the body portion at a point spaced` In testimony whereof I affix my signature from the lower edge of the body and relain presence of two Witnesses.
5 tively near thereto and extending parallelly GEORGE J. BALKE Y.
with the edge, one edge of the cutting mern- Witnesses z' ber having an indented portion therein, said J. M. GEOGHEGAN,
member being so struck ont that it is sub- Los 1vVIN1iMA1\I.
