entrant NIPPLE FOR NURSING BOTTLES.
Letihgtid.
* Application filed April 4, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANNA C. TnoneaonnsoN, citizen or" the United States, residing at Nadeau in the county of Menominee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nipples for Nursing Bottles; and I do declare the following to he a full, clear and exact description of the invention -such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apps-r tains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved nipple for nursing bottles, the principal object thereof being to provide a nipple which is of such construction that it can be removed from the bottle have its ends separated and its inner face thoroughly cleansed so as to remove all deposits therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a nipple which is such in construction that it can be adjusted to fit bottle necks of various sizes, and may also be adjusted to vary the length of the mouthpiece to pre vent possible choking of babies who push the nipple into their mouth too "far.
A further object of the invention is to provide a nipple which is such in construction that it prevents the creation of a vacuum, which is objectionable and tends to hinder free flow of the milk from the bottle, and is sometimes detrimental to the health of the baby.
Another object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive washable nipple in the form of a fiat sheet of elastic material which is rolled upon itself to provide a cone which is placed over the neck of the bottle, a suitable binding element being placed around the intermediate portion of the nipple underneath the bead on the neck of the bottle and thus insuring against possible accidental displacement of the nipple from the neck.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a nipple for nursing bottles which is such in construction that it is possible to vary the size of the outlet hole to regulate the amount of milk permitted to escape. Hence, one nipple may be used for a consid erable length of time and the size of the outlet opening varied as the child grows older.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description:
In the accompanying drawings forming a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1922.
Serial No. 458,404.
part of the specification and in which like numerals are employed to (:Lesignate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a perspectiveview o'lt' nipple constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the same in position for use on a nursing bottle.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the sheet of material from which the nipple is formed.
Figure 3 is a detailed perspective view of the preferred type of binding element used for retaining the nipple on the neck of the bottle.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a substantially semi-circular sheet of rubber which is intended to be rolled upon itself and have its ends arranged in overlapping relation as indicated at 1 to provide a conical nipple 2. It is understood that when rolling the sheet .to form the aforesaid cone or nipple it is so rolled as to provide a small discharge opening 3 at the top. At this point, it may be mentioned that with my construction the size of the opening may be varied to regulate the flow of milk, thereby overcoming the possibility of feeding the baby too much milk which may result in an attack of indigestion. After the conical nipple is thus formed, it is fitted down over the neck of the nursing bottle A so that the lower edge rests on the body or upper shoulders of the latter. Then the binding elements 4 are placed around the intermediate portion of the nipple just below the head on the neck of the bottle, thus retaining the nipple tightly in place and preventing possible displacement thereof. While the binding element 4 may be of any other construction, we preferto employ a piece of washable cord for the purpose and form loop 5 at one end of the cord, the opposite end thereof being passed through this loop 5 to form a relatively larger loop 6 which is intended to be placed around the nipple at the point shown. The smaller loop 5 carries a slidable retainer 7 which is designed to frictionally engage the free end of the cord to prevent slippage thereof.
In order to form the nipple from the flat sheet of rubber, the lower left-hand corner 8 is rolled and brought over to the point 9 to form the initial cone. Further rolling of the sheet will form the complete cone which consists of several layers of material, and such an arrangement will render it practically impossible for air to enter or liquid to escape. Hence, the nipple will not be detrimental to the childs health in any way. In fact, it will promote good health in that it will permit a thorough cleansing of the in ner face of the sheetaiter each using, thereby enabling the nipple to be kept extremely sanitary at all times. It is suggested that in forming the nipple, the cone be made sufiiciently small so as to permit the base thereof to be drawn tightly down over the head of the neck of the bottle, thereby enabling it to hug the bead sufficiently tight to insure against leakage at this point. Assuming that the nipple is in place, the large loop 6 of the rtaining cord is then placed around the intermediate portion of the nipple just beneath the head on the neck of the bottle. Then the free end thereof is again wrapped around the nipple and then drawn into the groove in the retainer 7, being thus trictionally held and prevented from slipping.
The foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings is thought to be sutlicient to enable the reader to obtain a clear undertsanding of the use, advantages, and construction of my improved nipple and retainer therefor. In View or" this, a more lengthy and detailed description is deemed unnecessary.
Since probably the best results may be obtained with the construction and arrangement herein shown and described, this construction and arrangement is taken as a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, slight minor changes in shape, size and arrangement may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. A nursing nipple formed from a flat sheet of washable material rolled upon itself to provide a cone to fit over the mouth of a bottle, and means to retain it on the bottle.
2. A nursing nipple formed from an elastic sheet of material rolled upon itself to form a cone to fit over the mouth of a bottle, and a binder surrounding the nipple just below the head of the neck of the bottle.
8. A nursing nipple formed from a flat sheet of elastic material substantially semi-- circular in shape, said sheet being rolled and having its ends overlapped to form a cone to fit over the neck of a bottle, the lower edge of the cone being intended. to rest on the body of the latter, and a retaining element to surround the intermediate portion of the cone beneath the head on the neck of the bottle.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ANNA CHARLGTTE THGRIBJORNSUN.
