Description
L. P. MERCER.
TRAVELER'S SAFE.
APPLICATION man SEPT. 2. 1921.
Patented Apr. 11, 1922.
LnwIs r. MERCER? or oriroaeo, IL'LINoIsQ TRAVELER S SAFE.
w ater. ofLettersPateiit. Patented Apri 11,1922.
Application filed September 2, 1921'. Serial No. @373 7 To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, Lnwrs MERG R, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Travelers"Safes, of which the following is a speclficatlon.
An object of the invention is to provide a safe or box which may be readily carriedby a traveler in his hand luggage, and wh ch may be applied to a portion of a sleeplng car or other structure having a sultable opening, and when so applied and the cover locked may not be removed therefrom by an unauthorized person. 7
An illustrative embodiment of the 1nvention is shown upon the accompanying drawings, in which n Fig. 1 is a vertical transverse section through a box, and a portion of a wall of a car- Fig. 2 is a like section showing the box in position to be applied to the wall;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view from the rear of the box, and
Fig. 4 is a detail front elevation.
The special use to which the box is designed to be put is to hold the valuables carried by 'a traveler upon a sleeping car. To this end advantage is taken ofthe presence of the slots which are uniformly pres ent in such cars for reception of straps upon the tables supplied between the seats for day time use of patrons. I
The box comprises a bodyportion 10'and a cover portion 11 having vertical walls thereon, shown as hinged tothe body 10" by hinges 18-14. 7 g
Taking advantage of the presence of the slots 15 referred to, straps 1617 are firmly secured to the box 10 and to the cover 11, and are provided with projecting portions 18 -19 adapted to enter the slot 15 and interlock therewith. The projecting portions are shown as curved in such a mannerthat when the cover 11 of the box is opened to the position shown in Fig. 2 the projections will swing into contact as shown in said figure, and may be readily passed through the slot 15. lVhen the box cover is closed the consequent separation of the projections 18-19 will separate them to the position'shown in Fig. 1, so that the box cannot be removed from the wall 20, as long as the cover remains closed. To render the locking of the box in place automatic aspring: lock comprisingan inside lock me'mber 21 and a keeper 22 secured to the cover ofthe boxis utilized. .To utilize'the safe 6O ,box fand with the cover still open'insert the pro ectlons 18 19into one of the slots 15' the traveler may placehis valuables in the which will appear above the mattress in his berth when prepared for sleeping, and by merely closing the cover and thus snap pirig the lock may secure the box to the wa The box should be made of a good quality of metal which cannot easily be cut open, and the bands 16-17 sufliciently rigid 'to render it impossible for any one to wrench the box away-from the wa'll with spring of the projections 181 9. Preferably,. as shown, the straps 16l7 are passed completely around the body 10 and the-cover 11, and are secured to the lock 21 and to the keeper 22.
Minor changes may be made in the physical embodiment of the invention without departing from its spirit.
I claim as my invention:
1. A safe comprising a body and a cover, means carried by said body adapted to project into an opening and means carried by V 7 namedi 'means with a wall of the opening. 1
said cover to interlock said "first 2. A safe comprislnga body and a cover, means projecting from said bodyadapted' to enter an opening. and means carried by sa d cover and actuated by its closureto interlock said first namedmeans with a-wall of the opening. 7
3; A safe comprising,
body,
ing upwardly from the'rear wall thereof,
in. combination, a F a projection extending from said body formingan acute angle'therewith, a cover,]9 aprojection extending from said cover slop I said projections adaptedtobe brought to a position adjacent each other when the cover 1s open so as topass through an opening and to interlock'with the walls of said opening when the cover isclosed. i
4. A safe comprising,"incombination, a body and a cover, astrapsecured to sald body and substantially surrounding the. same, one end of said strap projecting from 7 the rear of the box inf a downwardly and? outwardly projecting position, a strapsecur'ed' to said cover'substantially surrounding the same and-pro ectlngfrom the rear of the box in an outwardly and upwardly direction, said projections adapted toap rear of the box in an outwardly and upwardly direction, said projections adapted to approach each other when the box is open so as to enter an opening and to interlock with the Walls of said opening when the boX is closed, a lock secured to the end of said 7 first-named strap upon the frontof the body,
and a keeper secured to the end or" said sec- 20 0nd named strap upon the front of the cover and adapted to coact with said look.
