To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AARON HIRscH Gunne- BAOHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and, useful Improve ments in Safes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in safes, and has for its object to provide mechanism of the character specified, for the safe storage of money, jewels and the like, wherein the safe is incorporated in a post or posts of a bed, in such position as will always be convenient for the user, the improvement comprising a chamber formed in the post and having a door provided with a look.

In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5, one of the posts 1 of a bed 1 of ordinary construction is provided with the safe, in the present instance one of the posts at the head being chosen.

Below the side plates, and intermediate the adjacent side plate and the lower end of the post, approximately half of the post is cut away for a suitable distance to form a door opening indicated at 2. An arcshaped door is hinged to one side edge of the door opening, as indicated at 4:, to close into the door opening, and in a position having its outer face flush with the outer face of the post but to swing into open position, shown in Figs. 2 and 8.

The door has a hasp 5 hinged thereto, as indicated at 6, and a staple 7 is provided on the post at the opposite side of the door opening for engagement by the beep. When the door is closed and the hasp is engaged with the staple the shackle of a padlock, indicated at 8, may be engaged with the staple to lock the door in place. It will be obvious that any kind of lock may be used, and in hotels, for instance, the lock might be furnished by the occupant of the room or the lock might be permanently attached to the door.

Partitions 9 are arranged transversely of the post, above and below the door opening to provide a suitable compartment in. the post. Each of these partitions9 has radial lugs 10 at suitable intervals, in the present instance being arranged at intervals of 90, and these lugs are adapted to extend through openings 11 in the post 1 to support the partition plate at the desired level.

A ring 12 isarranged about the post at the level of the partition, covering and concealing the ends of the lugs 10. This partition provides a closed chamber in the post,

and it will be noticed that the partitions 9 are spaced above and below the door.

In Figs. 6 and 7, the post 13 is squared. Approximately half the post is cut away to form the door opening 14: and the "door 15 is shaped to fit the opening and to be flush with the exterior of the post. This door is hinged to the post, as indicated at 16, to one side of the door opening, and has a staple 17 at the opposite side for engagement with the hasp 18, which in turn receives the shackle of a pad lock 19.

The improved safe may be constructed during the building of the bed at a slight additional expense, and it furnishes a secure receptacle for valuables, as a protection the opening, each partition'liaving radial lugs and the post having openings for receiving the lugs, and a ring secured about the post at the ends of the lugs and concealing said lugs.
