DAVED BERGER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HEEL FOR LADIES SHOES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1922.
Application filed November 30, 1920. Serial No. 427,278.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVED BERGER, a citizen of Hungary, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Heel for Ladies Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention comprehends a novel construction of a heel for ladies shoes to which can be readily attached a leather or rubber heel.
It is now customary to make the body portion of the heel out of wood which is painted or stained the desired color or which is covered with leather, cloth or other material. Heels of this character often become cracked and broken and it is difficult to straighten them Or attach to them the heel portion which forms the tread surface.
In accordance with my present invention the heel is formed with a top member adapted to be connected with the shoe and with a lower memberv connected with and spaced from the top member. The heel is given the proper contour by forming it of wire mesh which is connected to the upper and lower portions of the heel. The heelwhich forms the tread portion is detachably connected with the body portion of the heel so that it may be replaced by the user when it becomes worn without rendering it necessary to send it to a repair shop.
Other novel features of'construction and advantage will hereinafter more fully ap-' pear in the detailed description.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying .bodiment will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown 'and described.
Figure 1 represents, in perspective, a heel for ladies shoes embodying my invention.
Figure 2 represents the heel in sectional elevation, the section being taken substantially on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 represents the heel in side elevation, with the tread portion removed.
Figure 4 represents, in perspective, certain of the parts 'of the construction in detached position.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawing.
1 designates the top plate which is cut away as indicated at 2 forming a U-shaped portion 3 which is provided with apertures 4. Depending from the plate 1 is a post 5 which is preferably tubular and preferably substantially centrally disposed with respect to the plate 1. The post 5 is adapted to be received in the slot 6 of a top member 7 which is preferably of leather and connected with the plate 1 by means of fastening devices 8 which pass through the apertures 4 and into the top member 7. The lower end ofthe post 5 passes through the aperture 9 in a bottom member 10 which is preferably made-of leather and the bottom face of this memberv 10 is covered by a metal plate 11 which is connected with the post 5 in any desired manner, for example, by welding or soldering. The plate 11 is provided with a plurality of apertures 12 adapted to receive the screws 13, the heads of which are concealed within the countersunk portions of the apertures 14 of the heel portion 15 which forms the tread surface.
16 designates a wire mesh which has the contour to form the desired shape of a ladies heel. This wire mesh at the bottom extends over the bottom face of the lower member 10 a desired distance and is secured between the member 10 and the plate 11. The wire mesh at the upper end is bent over the plate 1. After the wire mesh of the proper form is secured in position a strip of leather 17 is secured thereto in any desired manner so that the entire side walls of the body portion of the heel will be covered. I preferably fillv of any desired nature so that when the body portion of the heel is finished it will have the same general appearance as if it was formed of wood or cast from metal. The leather or other covering is folded over the top plate 1 as indicated at 19 and secured thereto in any desired manner, for example, by means of adhesive. The heel is secured to the shoe by means of the screws 20 which pass through the sole of the shoe at the heel portion thereof.
If at any time the tread portion becomes worn down or if it is desired to change from a rubber to a leather tread portion or vice versa the tread portion can be readily removed by the user by simply unscrewing the screws 13, removing the tread portion, replacing a'nother tread portion in position and securing it in place by means of the screws 13.
A heel constructed in accordance with my present invention can be economically manufactured and can be readily repaired whenever desired. v
It will now be apparent that I have devised a new and useful heel for ladies shoes which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that such embodiment is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the in vention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention,.
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a 1. A heel for ladies shoes, comprising a top and a bottom plate, a top and a bottom leather portion, a post connecting said plates, wire mesh forming the side walls of the body portion between said plates, and a detachable tread portion secured next to said bottom plate.
2. A heel for ladies shoes, comprising a top and a bottom plate, a top and a bottom leather portion, a post connecting said plates, w1re mesh forming the side walls of the body portion between said plates, and a composition filling the space within said wire mesh.
3. A heel for ladies shoes, comprising a top plate having a port-ion cut away and having a recess and a depending post, a member secured to said plate to cover the recessed portion, a second member at the lower end of said post and into which the post passes, a bottom plate connected to said 0st, wire mesh secured in position by sai top and bottom plates and having its side wall conforming to the shape of the body portion of the heel, a composition within said wire mesh to maintain its formation, and a covering for said wire mesh.
4:. A heel for ladies shoes, comprising a top and a bottom plate, a post connecting said plates, a top and bottom leather portion through which said post passes, wire mesh conforming to the shape of the heel and connected to said top and bottom plates, said bottom plate having openings therethrough, a detachable heel, fastening devices passing through said openings and engaging the bot-- tom leather portion tosecure the detachable heel in place, and a filling within said wire mesh to maintain its formation.
