E. J. BRISBEN SOLE TIP Filed Sept. 10 1921 Patented June 12, T9235.
un t stares EB/NEST J. BRISBEN, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SOLE TIP.
Application filed September 10, 1921. Serial No. 499,611.
To all 10. 2 am it may concern:
Be it known that T, ERNEs'r J. BRISBEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of East Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sole Tips, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of the invention are to pro vide an improved form of sole or toe clip, constructed and arranged to receive the wear upon the toe, at the point where the sole is most heavily worn, and also constructed to provide protecting means for the heads of the nails or screws, by means of which it is applied to the sole.
The invention also includes additional metal pads, attached to the inner face of the sole tip, and provided with vertical pins or plugs which project through the wall of the sole tip, and while adapting themselves readily to the shape of the bottom of the sole of the shoe, project far enough to re ceive the wear upon the tip, and also protect the reenforcing means for the nail or screw head, where wear is the greatest.
The metal pads are preferably two in number, and are each preferably provided with onepin, which projects through corre sponding openings in the bottom of the tip, and form spaced point of engagement with the floor, which have the great advantage of preventing the sole of the shoe from slipping upon icy or wet pavements.
The device is particularly useful for street or shop wear, but can be used in all situations, as the plugs may be chamfered upon their lower corners to prevent all danger of scratching upon varnished floors.
The invention is hereinafter further described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is the plan of the bottom of a shoe tip; Fig. 2 is the plan of the inside of the shoe tip; Fig. 3 is the longitudinal section therethrough.
In these views, A represents a pointed plate, having a central longitudinal opening, B, enlarged at the point, at C.
On either side of the opening are formed annular projections, D, which form ringshaped beads upon the bottom surface, forming recesses, E, in which the heads of the nails, F, are sunk, so as not to scratch upon the floor when the wearer is walking upon tiem.
Upon the upper face of the bottom tip plate, are placed thin metal pads or plates, G, G, one on each side of the central opening. These plates are riveted or welded on their" rear ends to the bottom plate, and at their front ends are provided with vertical pins or plugs H, which extend downwards and pass through openings, I, I, in the bottom plate.
These plugs normally project downwards to substantially the same depth as that of the lower edge of the beadsdescribed. These plugs are reduced at their inner ends to provide shoulders, J, J, which abut against the thin metal pad and prevent the plugs from slipping through the pad and are secured to the thin pad plate by riveting or otherwise.
Since the plugs attached to the inner pads or plates extend downward to the lower edges of the beads they receive the thrust of the toe, and yield to pressure, thus relieving the toe of the clip from wear, and also relieving the toe of the wearer from shock, and also adjust themselves to the sole of the toe.
The sole tips are formed of integral sheet metal parts having an upwardly turned flange K at the front which extends rearwardly on each side ofv the tip nearly to the rear extremities thereof.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a sole tip, a metal toe plate provided with a longitudinal opening therein extending from the rear nearly to the front edge thereof, thin metal pads secured at their rear ends to the upper surface of said toe plate, and having their free ends extend ing forwardly towards the front end of said plate, said plate provided with openings underneath the front extremities of said pads, and vertical plugs passing through said toe plate and attached at their upper ends to said pads, said pads movable with said plugs when pressure is applied thereto.
2. In a sole tip, a metal toe plate provided with a longitudinal opening therein extend ing from the rear nearly to the front edge thereof, thin metal pads secured at their rear ends to the upper surface of said toe plate, and having their free ends extending forwardly towards the front end of said plate, said plate provided with openings underneath the front extremities of said pads, and vertical plugs passing through said toe plate and attached at their, upper ends to said pads, said pads movable with said plugs when pressure is applied thereto, the bottom surface of said toe plate provided with spaced circular beads forming cavities for the'enclosure ofnails or similar attaching means, and said plugs having their lower ends normally at the level of the lower edges of said beads.
3. Ina sole tip, a metal toe plate pro vided with a longitudinal opening therein extending from the rear nearly to the front edget-hereof, thin metal pads secured at their rear ends to the upper surface of said toe plate, and having their free ends extending forwardly towards the front end of said plate, said plate provided with openings underneath the front extremities of said ads andvertical lu 's )assin throu h i 7 C) D if) said toe p'l'ateand attached at their upper ends" to said pads; said pads movable with said plugs when pressure is applied thereto, thebottom surface of said toe plate provided with spaced circular beads forming cavities for the enclosure of nails or similar attaching means and said plugs having their lower ends normally at the level p of the lower edges of said beads.
4. In a sole tip, a metal toe plate provided with a longitudinal opening therein extending from the rear nearly to the front edge thereof, thin metal pads secured at their rear ends to the upper surface of said toe plate, and having their free ends eX- tending forwardly towards the front end of said plate, said plate'providedwith openin gs underneath the front extremities of said pads, and vertical plugs passing through said toe plate and attached at their upper ends to said pads, said pads movable with said plugs when pressure 18 applled thereto,
the bottom surface of said toe plate provided with spaced circular beads formingcavities for the enclosure of nails or similar'attaching' means and said plugs having their lower ends normally at the level of the lower edges In presence of WM. M. MONROE, CHAS. C. GoLDMAN.
