The present invention relates to a new and improved coal pushing or feeding device adapted to be used on locomotive tenders or coal cars, or in connection-With other means anddevices adapted to contain coal in bulk. The principal object of my'invention .is to providea coal-pushing or feeding device primarily designed for use in lconnection with locomotive tenders which is1 adapted to push or feed'the coal towardthe normally open end of the tender thus facilitating the firing of the engine, or locomotive. f V'Another object of the invention :is to provide a-device of the above character which includes means normally positionedl behind the bulk of coal together vvith.` means and mechanism to move .the same longitudinally whereby the coal Within the tender may be moved toward the iorvvard end thereof so that the fireman may have access thereto at all times.

The
steam cylinder carries a piston' 22 having a head 23V for operative movement'therein and the vpiston projects'through an opening 24 into .the main coal compartment 15;;as also shown in Figure 3.
-Within the water compartment 11 are arranged longitudinal sleeves 25 and 26' through which extend steam pipes 27 and 28- which connect to opposite ends of the steam cylinder 21 `as clearly shown in Figure 3. The steam pipes 27 and 28 extend downwardly on the outside of the water compartment and are carried on the under side of thetender 'by means of brackets 29. The steam pipes are also-connected to other steam pipes 30 and'314 that are carried by the locomotive `and which are provided with suitable valves (not shown) whereby ingress of steam into the cylinder 21 may be controlled. n
On its outer `end andV within Ythe main coal compartment 15, the piston 22 carries the main pushin memberl 32 which is of slightlyless widt than the main coal containing s pace 15 and which carries at its lower end a gate 33 that is hingedlfthereto asiat 34 for folding movement` inl one direction. In lother words during theforward movement of member 32, the ate will l be firmly held in alignment therewlth butv upon return movement, the gate will 'fold forwardly upon' contact with any loose coal or.. foreign matter in the bottom 'of the coal `containing space 15.l The front face of the member 32 may also be provided with reinforcing members 35 which are secured in place as at 36 land which may be arranged in angular relation with respect to each other as shown in Figure 4. At its rear end the supplemental Vmember 41 is turned upwardly as at 44 and then out- 'wardly as at 45 toV project overvthe cross member 20 whenthe device is in itsnormal position and as clearly shown in'Figure 3. The sides of the supplemental member are turned upwardly' as at 46 and then outwardly as at 47 to project over the upstanding portions 19 of the tender and again bent downwardly to terminate in longitudinal sleeves 48. Between the Vportion 47 of the supplemental member .41 andthe upper edges ofthe extended portions 19 of the tenvmatically tiltthesupplemental member 41 after the'same has-been moved forward a certain distance, I provide the longitudinal sleeves 48 vthereof with longitudinally disposed rods 52 which carry at their forwardl ends downwardly and Aforwardly' extending trip arms 53 as clearly fshown in Figures2 and 3. At suitable points on the sides ofthe tender 10 are arranged stop rollers 54 with which the trip arms Y53 become engaged after the supplemental member 41has beenmoved forward av 'certain distance. When the trip arms engage the stop vrollers 54 and the member 32 continuesto carryifthe supple mental member forward, theY angular disposition of the trip arms causes the supplementalmember to betitled until it finally reachesA the position shownin, dotted lines` in Figure-3. Itfwill-befobserved that the coal contained on the supplemental member .will be .dumped intothe main coal-compartment 15 so that the entire bulk ofjcoal carriedby the. tendervwill have been placed'- before the opening-118 'inTA the outletg'ate 17.' '.-On reference to 'Figure ,1 it will bernoted that'the intermediate portion ofthe supple#l mentalmember 41 is suitably curved as at 55 to conform to the contoury of the upper` part of the steam cylinder 21'.A n
lIn operation the-coal is depositedin the main .receiving space 15 and upon the sup-V plemental member 11 in the conventional way. As the fireman shovels the coal away from the opening 18, hemay manipulate suitable valves in the locomotive cab.so as to cause steam. to be admitted to the rear end of the steam cylinder 21 which will force the piston 22 forwardly and carry with it the main pushing member 32 and the supplemental member 11. During the rst few feet of movement of the piston, the main pushing force will be exerted by the member 32 and the supplemental mem bei' will be carried forward in a horizontal position. However', continued forward movement will bring the trip arms into engagement with the stop rollers 54 so as to tilt the supplemental member 41 in the position shown in dotted line in Figure 3. Thus it will be observed that the entire bulk of coalmay be positioned immediately adjacent the opening 18 in the gate 17 from which point it may be easily and quickly removed by the fireman.
From the foregoingit is believed that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily understood and therefore further detailed description is deemed unnecessary.
What is claimed is 1. In a device of the character described, the combinationwith a locomotive Vtender or vcoal ycar having a coal receivingV coinpartment and said compartment having an outlet opening at one end, of coal pushing meansV mounted for longitudinal movement within said compartment, a. supplemental member ycarried by said coal pushing means and tenders and coal cars, a main pushing mem-y ber mounted forlongitudinal movement in the main coal compartment of said tender vor coal car, means to move said pushing member forwardly and rearwardly within said compartment, and a suitable coal receiving member carried by said mainy pushing member adapted to be titled at a predetermined time during the forward move-v ment of said main pushing member'.` substantiallyy described.
The combination with a locomotive tender or coal car having a coal receiving compartment provided withan outlet openingv at one end thereof, of a steam cylinder mounted longitudinally behind said coal receiving compartment, a piston operating within said cylinder and projecting through said compartment,A a main pushing member carried by said piston for forward and backward movement within said compartment, a gate carried at the lower end of said pushing member and mounted for foldable relation in one direction with respect to the main piston member, a coal receiving member hingedly mounted on said main pushing member and adapted to normally assume a horizontal position, automatic means including trip arms carried by said coalreceiving member and stop rollers carried by said tender or coal car adapted to tilt said coal receiving member at a predetermined time during the forward movement of said main pushing member, means to support said main vpushing member during its forward and backward movement independent of said soL piston, and anti-friction means carried by said coal receiving member engageable with said tender or coal car substantially described.
4. A device of the character specified comprising the combination with a locomotive tender having a coal pit with an outlet opening, of vertically disposed coal-pushing means mounted for reciprocal movement 'within said pit, a supplemental coal-carrying member hingedly connected to said pushing means adjacent the upper edge and [normally lying in a horizontal plane, said member having guide extensions engageable over the side edges of the tender, vmeans for y reciprocating lthe said coal-pushing means and means for automatically tilting the supplemental member at a predetermined point in its forward travel.
5. A device of the character described comprising a tender having a water com-v partment and a main coal space, extension means providing yan additional space above the water compartment for receivingV coal, a reciprocal coal-pushing member within the main coal space, a cylinder arranged partlyl within the water compartment and partly within the additional coal space, ay piston operable in said cylinder and connected to said coal-pushing means for reciprocating` the latter, and a supplemental carrying member filling the said additional coal space and having a curved portion receiving the upper part of the saidcylinder whereby thelatter serves as a guide for the supplemental member,said member being hinged to thepushing member for movement therewith and means for tilting the supplemental member to adischarging position at a predetermined pointin its forward travel.
