Description
G. W. HAAS.
No. 431,052. Patented July 1, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE VVILLIAH HAAS, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
LOCOMOTlVE-TENDER.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,052, dated uly 1, 1890.
Application filed November 19, 1889- Serial No. 330,860. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, GEORGE WILLIAM HAAS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Locomotive-Tender, of which the following is a specifications The invention relates to improvements in locomotive-tenders.
The object of the present invention is to provide a locomotive-tender which is capable of having its coal-bunk increased any desired size and which Will direct the coal to within easy reach of the fireman.
Existing forms of tenders have uniformly been made much shorter in length than either locomotives or cars, for the reason that coal necessarily has to be maintained close to the cab for convenient removal thereto, and for the reason that the multifarious duties of the fireman and the necessity of having the fur nace-doors opened and closed as speedily as possible render it important that but little time be lost in taking coal from the bunk in feeding the engine, and upon extended trips the coal-bunk has to be frequently replenished, or, what is customary, an additional tender is used, and the coal is shoveled from the rearmost tender into the hunk of that next to the engine, thereby involving additional tenders, labor, time, and expense. I am also aware that tenders of additional length having two coal-compartments have been employed and are pivoted centrally, and when the coal in one of the bunks has been consumed the tender is rotated to bring the other bunk in position for use.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a locomotive tender constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional View. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view, the section being taken on line so a: of Fig. 3.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates the tender-body, which is designed to be mounted upon a frame supported by trucks in the usual manner, and is provided with a false bottom or partition B, which forms the bottom of the coal-bunk and divides the space within the tender into a tank or water-compartment and a coal-bnnk.
The false bottom or partition Bis composed of four sides or sections 1) b b 12 whose tapering edges are secured together. The sides or sections are slanting and incline toward the center of the coal-bunk, which is provided with an opening 0, through which coal passes and is directed bya chute to the front of the tender, where it is within easy reach of the fireman and enables him to transfer the coal from the bunk to the engine in exceedingly short time. By this construction the coaltender can be constructed any size to hold any desired amount of coal, and the inclined sides of the bottom B of the coal-bunk will direct the coal to the central opening which will deliver the coal by means of the chute to the front of the tender, which construction is a great advantage over those in which it is necessary for the fireman to enter the tender and shovel the coal toward the front as the supply diminishes. The front section b is supported by vertical partitions D, which form the walls of the chute, and the rear sec tion of the coal-bunk bottom is extended and inclines toward the front of the tender and forms an inclined way or bottom D of the chute.
The tender is provided at each side with horizontal partitions E, which are arranged at the front and between the vertical partitions D and the sides a of the tender-body and extend rearward to about the middle of the tender, where they meet and are joined to the section b of the bunk-bottom, and form between them and the front section b of the bunk-bottom spaces, which serve as convenient receptacles for tools, and the front a of the tender is provided with suitable openings a which communicate with the said spaces a. or tool-compartments, and are closed by hinged doors F, that are secured in place by suitable latches. The space inclosed by the horizontal partitions E, the coal-bunk bottom, and the body of the tender forms a watertank, and the rear section of the bunk-bottom has a water-tube G, that communicates with the water-tank and is provided with a suitable cap g.
The front of the tender is provided with the usual cocks for drawing the Water from 5 the tank.
What I claim is The tender provided with a false bottom having a central opening and composed of the four sides or sections inclined toward the 16 central opening, the rear side or section being extended through the central opening to the front of the tender and forming an inscribed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aifixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE WILLIAM HAAS.
