SAMUEL M. KAII-ICABT, OF POTOSI, MISSOURI, ASSIG-NOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES IVI. COOPER, 0F- POTOSI, MISSOURI.
:PIPE WRENCH.
Application led December 4, 1926.
vide a wrench of this character which isv simple in construction, the parts thereof being assembled in such relation as to produce a wrench of great strength and durability.
ln the accompanying drawing:
Figure lis a side elevation of the wrench.
Figure 2 is a view partly in elevation and partly in vertical section.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary back edge view.
Figure 4; is a sectiona'l view lon line 1 -4: of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the handle having upon one of its edges a housing 2 and guide 3 disposed in spaced relation and in alinement with each other.
Slidable in the housing 2 is the shank 11 of the inner jaw 5, said jaw having its outer face provided with serrations 6, as is customary in wrenches of this type. The shank L has formed integral therewith an odset threaded stem 7 the rear end of which 1s enf gaged in the guide 3. Threaded upon this stem is a nut 8, which occupies the space be tween the housing 2 and guide 3 when in its assembled relationship. It is through the instrumentality of this nut that the aw 5 is adjusted.
rlhe upper edge of the forward end of the handle 1 is machined to provide relatively deep and shallow grooves 9 and 10, respectively, and resultant side walls/11 which terminate at their forward ends in spaced ears 12, said ears serving to support a transversely disposed bolt or pin 18, the purpose of Serial No. 152,618.
which will later appear. The outer or pivoted jaw 14 is provided upon its inner face with serrations 15 which are oppositely inclined with respect to the serrations 6 of the aw 5.
The shank 16 of the jaw 14 is formed with 55 a relatively narrow web 16 adapted to fit snugly between the ears 12, said web having a perforation 17 therein and in which the bolt 18 is engaged to pivotally sustain the 14 upon the handle 1.
rlhe web 16C is provided with an'integrally connected rearwardly extending lever 18 capable of occupying the grooves 9and 1G when the respective. jaws are operatively engaged with a pipeor rod. i
Mounted in the groove 9 is a coil spring 19 which engages the under side of the lever 18 and tends to urge the same outwardly, thus swinging the jaw 14 toward the jaw 5 to permit the respective jaws to intermit- .fu tently engage the work when the hand'le 1 is oscillated.
When the jaws have firmly gripped the work, the lever 18 will be conned in the grooves 9 and 10, with the upper surface thereof in a plane with the handle edge, the base of the groove 10 serving to limit inward swinging` movement of said lever.
Thus, it will be seen that when the wrench is in use, the lever wi'll be so positioned as to protect the hands from injury if the hand slips. Owing to the fact that the lever is confined in the grooves, it will not only be protected from injuring the hand, but will also be prevented from catching in the workmans clothes.
When it is desired to turn a pipe or rod of comparatively small diameter, the nut 8 is rotated to feed the jaw 6 forwardly until the jaws are spaced Aapproximately a distance corresponding to the diameter of the pipe or rod, whereupon the lever 18 is pressed inwardly to permit the work to enter between the jaws, after which the nut is manipulated to obtain a ner adjustment of the jaw 5. 95 i Havingl thus describedthe invention, what I claim is:
A wrench comprising a handle having relatively deep and shallow grooves formed engaged with the lever and tending to urge therein, the walls of the grooves having the outer jaw toward the inner jaw, said spaced ears carried thereby, an inner jaw lever being confined in the groove when the 10 slidably mounted on the handle, an outer jaws are engaged with the Work.
5 jaw including a web pivotally mounted be- In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature.
tween the ears, said web having a lever, a spring mounted in the deeper groove and SAMUEL M. K ATHCART. [ns1
